to be surprised to see photos of Suri Cruise sucking a dummy?

I'm not against dummies, if they're being used for the right reasons, eg to calm a baby who is reliant on sucking to get comfort, or for helping a baby sleep. But I hate seeing people stuff a dummy in their baby's mouth each and every time it whimpers.
I also don't feel that it's particularly necessary / advisable for a child who is 5 next month.

Disclaimer - I am fully aware that there are exceptions to this, but I am referring to healthy, happy kids - no special needs or emotional problems etc etc etc.

Just my opinion - don't shoot me :)
Just wondering what others think

Meh,i'm still waiting to see an adult tottering about in public with a dummy stuck in their mush.

CheerfulYank · 07/03/2011 16:08

I don't think she's autistic, I think she's a spoiled little girl who is allowed to make all of her own decisions and has no notion of a normal life or ever will have. Sad.

:) @ Spermy ...it was a sleb rag so you never know!

SpermyShenanigans · 07/03/2011 16:10

Yes I was thinking possible autism because of the carrying thing as my DS also needs to be picked up lots due to phobias.

But didn't want to be jumped on. So sad for Suri if that is true Sad

NorthernGobshite · 07/03/2011 16:10

Is there a suggestion Suri has autism? From whom?

RoundOrangeHead · 07/03/2011 16:12

I had a dummy until I was about 7

not at school though, only at home

can't remember when it went, obv wasn't a big deal

SpermyShenanigans · 07/03/2011 16:13

Sorry to derail, I couldn't resist.

amiheartless · 07/03/2011 16:13

if shes 5 next month I would feel its a little wierd about but at the end of the day, its their child

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 07/03/2011 16:15

Noooooooooooooooo, far too young. I do remember the strange trend for plastic dummies tho Grin

SpermyShenanigans · 07/03/2011 16:26

Hang on, wasn't Scientologist John Travolas's late son severely autistic? Autism has a clear genetic basis.

I look at the articles about Suri and wonder if because she seems so like my DS except older.

So I don't judge in that respect.

Judging Scientologist multi-millionaires who deny their child's SN is another matter entirely Hmm

vmcd28 · 07/03/2011 16:32

Spermy, john travolta's son is believed to have been autistic but they have always denied it. Horrendous attitude - whether it's religious or otherwise.

Suri never ever seems to smile. Ever. My friend's autistic ds never smiles either so it could be another pointer. However I'm not surprised she always wants carried- id be terrified and insecure with paparazzi in my face constantly

OP posts:
anonacfr · 07/03/2011 16:35

Spermy the Travoltas never publicly admitted that their son had autism. They claimed he had Kawasaki disease caused by some carpet cleaner he was exposed to.
Travolta only mentioned autism at the official inquiry.

Sparkletastic · 07/03/2011 16:39

was it a Prada or a Gucci dummy?

Wink
SpermyShenanigans · 07/03/2011 17:01

"We don't know whether this child has SN and it is none of our business. To be honest, the poor girl has problems enough IMO without all the speculation and / or judging"

I said that.

Spermy
I am not sure what your ' autism is genetic' point is?

My ds has severe autism and there is no asd in either side of dhs or my substantial extended family. Nor his siblings. I am not convinced that there is a genetic link in his regression into asd.

Was your point that autism would be more or less likely in suris case?

Normantebbit · 07/03/2011 17:23

So far you speculating she is autistic because:

  1. she has a dummy ( while facing crowd of paparazzi)

  2. her mum picks her up alot ( in crowd of paparazzi

  3. she doesn't smile ( when faced with shouting paparazzi)

  4. John travolta's son might have been autistic

  5. er... That's it.

MintyMoo · 07/03/2011 17:29

I had a dummy until I was 7, aside from my own SN I'm like most adult women. My teeth are fine (did have a brace but the orthodontist said I would have needed one dummy or no dummy). My speech is fine and I breastfed for 18 months with no nipple confusion. No negative effects for me aside from the fact I wouldn't sleep without one for 7 years!

Suri is often carried so I wouldn't be surprised if she did have SN (I was in a buggy until I was about 5 and struggled to walk long distances)

Of course she could just be carried because of the paparazzi or because she's a four year old who gets tired and likes to be held. And to be fair - if I was four and had the paparazzi in my face constantly I'd probably want a dummy too!

MmeLindt · 07/03/2011 17:29

Not sure where the autism thing came from, plenty of children have dummies longer than advisable.

Or where Travolta's son fits into this theory.

I find the pic of her with bright red lipstick more worrying than the dummy, tbh.

anonacfr · 07/03/2011 17:45

SecondComing don't you find it slightly odd that there are pictures of Suri in the press every day when other famous people manage to raise kids relatively privately?

A friend of mine works for InTouch (American Heat) and she told me that the Cruises were infamous for calling the media whenever Suri goes for a 'walk'. She told me once the story behind Suri photographed playing in a park in Australia. What actually happened was that her parents arrived with her in 2 separate cars, took her out in front of the paparazzi, walked around for a few minutes and then drove off again in their separate cars. It happens all the time according to my friend. That's why Katie Holmes never had pushchairs or nappy bags when Suri was younger- her car was usually parked nearby with the nanny in tow.

There is also a film on a paparazzi website where Tom Cruise plays coy with the photographers and asks them what they're doing there. One of them is actually heard replying 'you called us'!
And she pointed out that in a lot of pictures where Suri is carried she's actually turned to face the photographers so they can get their money shot.

Ever since she told me all this I've started looking at all the Suri pictures. They're all odd. Half the time mother and child looked bored out of their mind anyway.

RoundOrangeHead · 07/03/2011 17:46

she is carried because as normantebbit said, there is a baying crowd of paparazzi following their every move

squeakytoy · 07/03/2011 17:50

Scientology is not a religion, it is a very highly funded cult. Absolutely brainwashing fodder.

Katie Holmes always looks utterly drained and miserable. The child is precocious and seems to have no real childhood. Why Katie continues to drag the poor child from filmset to filmset when all she is doing is making poor straight to dvd movies I have no idea. Its not as if they need the money.

Tom Cruise is a weird control freak and not a very nice person at all by all accounts.

MmeLindt · 07/03/2011 17:51

That is really sad. Poor little girl.

SpermyShenanigans · 07/03/2011 17:57

Pagwatch you may know me from the SN board under another name.

My DS is autistic, I have AS (adopted no idea of my medical history which is quite frightening when you have to rely on NHS screening), DH comes from a family of engineers and computer programmers on both sides.

Sorry if I am wrong about ASD. My son was possibly always going to be autistic but was also damaged by MMR quite severely in many other ways.

I didn't mean to upset you or to be insensitive.

I suppose when your child is diagnosed you may see possible SN everywhere and while I started off saying it was none of anyone's business I couldn't help speculating in a distasteful manner.

Hence my apologetic post.

But I'm not the first person to make a tit of myself on AIBU nor will I be the last. I'd like to think that I'm one of the people who freely admit it though.

MaybeTomorrow · 07/03/2011 17:58

Hmmm it does seem a bit strange...

Having said that, I have a friend, 33, who when she is at home (doesn't take it to friends houses...) still has a blue baby blanket that she cuddles up with on the sofa while she sucks her thumb. The blanket is a rag now, naturally, but THAT is weird... Hmm

I remember the first time I met her (her DH is my DH's BF) she apologised for it in advance. Very strange...
