To hate 'short' shorts aimed at babies?

ReindeerBollocks · 06/03/2011 17:46

I was out shopping today for DD who is 2. I was amazed at the amount of teeny shorts there are for babies. They were much shorter than normal shorts for little ones, and were based on the 'barely covering their bottom' variety that I'd see on grown women. Okay, some pairs came with leggings or tights, but I was still slightly disgusted that little ones need to keep up to date with these type of trends.

I personally feel these shorts are meant to be sexy on women (as you can see a hell of a lot of leg) but then why recreate this for babies? I'm not saying all babies need to be in baby grows all the time, but there are many options, I just felt this particular item was not necessary for little ones.

I fully realise I'm turning into a prude in my old age, but am I on my own in disliking this piece of clothing?

DD was still in nappies at that age. It really wouldn't have been a good look.

MillsAndDoom · 06/03/2011 17:51

YANBU this is a pet hate of mine. DD is 7 but very tall and so ends up having to buy clothes a few sizes up and the shorts in the likes of Next, Primark, Matalan etc would have her backside hanging out.

Horrid and trashy

squeakytoy · 06/03/2011 17:51

Are these meant to be holiday wear? If so, I dont see he problem if the child is on the beach. Perfect for paddling in.

bamboostalks · 06/03/2011 17:52

I have never seen these, can you link? Sounds very odd.

BetamaxBandit · 06/03/2011 17:56

My DD is 3 and wears shorts / short dungarees with woolly tights. She looks lovely.

Probably not so practical for babies though.

ReindeerBollocks · 06/03/2011 17:58

No squeaky toy - I fear these were for everyday wear, as some were sold with tights to wear as an outfit, in the normal clothing section, not with the holiday/swimsuits sets.

I don't have anything against shorts for little ones, but it was the fact that these were based on the adult version, which isn't aiming for practicality or comfort.

I'm not sure what the adult ones look like Confused Like hot pants?

ReindeerBollocks · 06/03/2011 18:14

BetamaxBandit (great name btw) they are slightly longer than hot pants but that's the main idea.

Bamboo - I've no idea how to link but they were being sold in a few shops today.

They aren't as long as normal shorts, or dungarees, I adore these normal length clothes with tights/leggings as this is the type of thing DD wears when destroying the house exploring.

I was pretty Shock when I saw some shorts which were cut as per hotpants on sale in mothercare last summer. Age seemed to be from 0 to about 6 or something.

They were cut as per hotpants ie high across the back so a bit of cheek would be showing. As modelled by Kylie spinning around, is one thing, on a 5year old, is quite another. What were they thinking? Confused

pozzled · 06/03/2011 18:21

Not sue what the problem is. If they're for summer wear then it would be a lot like putting a baby in a vest wouldn't it? The ones with tights or leggings sound a bit weird though, I guess I would need to see an example.

SardineQueen · 06/03/2011 18:25

Imagine a 5yo walking up the road in a pair of shorts like kylie wore in the spinning around video ie with a flash of bum cheek on display with every step.

SardineQueen · 06/03/2011 18:26

Well that's what the ones I saw were like I can't speak for the OP!

stressheaderic · 06/03/2011 18:27

DD has this and it looks very sweet on and not at all hotpanty. She is 1.

pozzled · 06/03/2011 18:32

I can see why it might be a problem on 5 year-olds, a lot more so IMO than babies.

Stressheaderic I like that outfit, I wouldn't see a problem with it at all.

SardineQueen · 06/03/2011 18:33

Aw sweet like little knickerbockers Smile

ReindeerBollocks · 06/03/2011 18:40

Yes Sardine the ones you describe sound exactly like what I saw today. Very short, but with leggings to cover up the nappy or backside (depending on age of child).

I'm sure babies who wear them look very cute, but the idea just doesn't sit right with me.

ReindeerBollocks · 06/03/2011 18:41

Stress - that outfit is cute, but the ones I saw were more 'adult' IYSWIM? They were made of denim and were short shorts.

princessparty · 06/03/2011 18:42

OP if you think short shorts for a baby are in some way sexually provocative then you have a big problem

princessparty · 06/03/2011 18:43

..and why a problem on a 5 yr old or 10 yr old for that matter?

ReindeerBollocks · 06/03/2011 18:48

Princessparty - I don't think the shorts are sexually provocative for the baby obviously, but the type of shorts they are based on are meant to be sexually provocative (the adult version). I just think copying this fashion trend for babies is unnecessary.

I was in the under twos section, thats why my post is aimed at this age group. Personally I wouldn't like them on five or ten year olds either.

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 06/03/2011 18:48

The ones I saw didn't come with tights or anything, they were summer wear Hmm

princessparty I think a lot of people do not like children to wear clothing which was originally designed to be worn by adult women with a view to making them look "sexy". So for me, high heels, boob tubes, hotpants, nipple tassles and crotchless knickers are all out for children. If that makes me a crazy prude so be it Grin

Teaandcakeplease · 06/03/2011 18:56

My DD is 3 - so not a baby but I bought this from tesco's for her and I think she looks fab! Her butt definitely is not hanging out. She looked cute imo Blush

NinkyNonker · 06/03/2011 19:42

Do you mean the kind of play knicker thing?
