Pulling out of a parking space

Something that really bugs me!

Today parked in the street, pulling out the car in front was really close and so was the one to the rear, so I checked nothing was coming, street was clear so I began pulling out, concentrating on not hitting the car in front, suddenly Mini appears from behind squeezing though the gap between my car and the car parked on the other side of the road ( must have missed it by an inch), the woman giving me the v sign as she passed.

The same is true when in a car park, when you start to back out of a space and nothing is coming they should stop and give way not carrying on assuming that they have been seen

Surely I am IANBU to presume that if someone comes across a manoeuvring vehicle I would expect them to give way

thisisyesterday, your situation is covered in case law relating to the Road Traffic Act and it is a 50/50 situation. I don't think it's quite equitable myself, but no insurer would support taking the case to court because they couldn't do better than 50/50.

If cars pulling out from the side of the road (or out of a parking space) were given priority, no-one would get anywhere. Yes, courtesy and common sense relating to the individual scenario would be nice, but it isn't realistic to rely on them.

Defensive driving makes sense because there are a whole load of people out there who really don't know what the fuck they are doing.

I agree with Heroine's dad. At least from an ethical point of view, even if not from a legal one.

On the other hand, I quite fancy 'asserting my right' to run into someone! Just got to decide who... Wink

Indeed. As my motorcycle training instructor put it, "Having the right of way doesn't make getting knocked off your bike and your legs run over hurt any less."

Defensive driving (or riding) is everything.
