'friend' just posted on FB "warning: do not lets your kids play on trampoline without a net" and then went on to explain that her son had fallen off and is concussed.

i thought that was common sense or do people normally not put nets up when they get a trampoline?

GypsyMoth · 04/03/2011 09:51

No. Not everyone does

BooyFuckingHoo · 04/03/2011 09:52

why not?Confused

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 04/03/2011 09:54

because some people don't.

my trampoline is dug in anyway.
But it is free choice. thank god

BooyFuckingHoo · 04/03/2011 09:55

what does dug in mean?

OP posts:
Bluebell99 · 04/03/2011 09:56

It's ok, some people may not have a net and it might make those people think. I remember my ds going to party when he was about 7 and when I went to pick him up the children were jumping from a tree branch to an unnetted trampoline, while an adult watched! Shock
I was quite late getting one for my dc but it has been the best thing ever, they use it almost every day, and they both have trampoline lessons so know how to be safe. Also turns out my ds is really good at it too, and was invited to join a club!

Pagwatch · 04/03/2011 10:00

it means it is dug into the ground, sunken.

BooyFuckingHoo · 04/03/2011 10:03

good point bluebell.

pag wouldn't it still need a net to stop anyone falling off?

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 04/03/2011 10:09

no. you can't fall off ground level.

the worst that could happen is that they jump up and land on the ground.

BooyFuckingHoo · 04/03/2011 10:12

ah right. has the ground below the trampoline been removed?

OP posts:
Needanewname · 04/03/2011 10:13

Pagwatch, how easy it is to put trampoline into the ground? what do you need to do (other than dig a bloody great big hole obviously!) I would like to do this for DD's but DH not keen as he says he's be the one doing all the work!

Pagwatch · 04/03/2011 10:24
Grin

i am sorry but that made me spit coffee.

yes. the ground under the trampoline has been dug to the depth of the legs.
otherwise I would just have a tarpaulin ground sheet really.

Needanewname

it is a huge amount of work in that you have to dig to the depth of the legs for the whole surface of the trampoline iyswim. You can't risk that the trampoline will stretch or sag and someone bouncing hard can connect with the ground on the down bounce.

you also have a surprisingly vast quantity of earth to then remove.

we paid someone to do it. it was absoloutely worth every penny. no fugly net. you can't actually see the trampoline right at the end of the garden and the children can run on and off it very safely

Acanthus · 04/03/2011 10:26

How do you stop the sides of the hole crumbling away though?

JenniPenni · 04/03/2011 10:27

I grew up jumping on a sunken trampoline - no net. Safest option if you don't want a net.

BooyFuckingHoo · 04/03/2011 10:30

yes i was picturing just the legs being sunken and the poor dc having a few inches of jumping space below the trampoline Grin

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 04/03/2011 10:31

i have heard that some people have to get the sides supported. but we were lucky and the earth was solid. been in 6 years now and still sound ( we check it every spring)

Melly19MummyToBe · 04/03/2011 10:33

"has the ground below the trampoline been removed?" pmsl :o

Pagwatch · 04/03/2011 10:36
Grin booy that was brilliant Grin

when we tried to get quotes to dig it out one guy quoted really cheaply and he thought he could just dig out a dougnut shape and sink the legs

CoronaAndLime · 04/03/2011 10:37

Sorry Boo, but pmsl! Grin

Hullygully · 04/03/2011 10:40

when i were a lass we nivver had nets (or trampoliones come to that) or bike helmets or knee pads or shin pads or safety goggles or nowt.

Needanewname · 04/03/2011 10:42

Brilliant - quote of the week contender surely!

Can I be cheeky pagwatch and ask how much it cost?

Eglu · 04/03/2011 10:42

Some people choose not to get a net and teach their DC to jump safely on the trampoline.

QuintessentialShadows · 04/03/2011 10:44

I dont think it sounds that much safer having it dug down, to be honest! A net prevents you from going anywhere there is no bounce. Suddenly hitting the ground, even if it is on the same level as the trampoline, will hurt quite a bit too, especially if you are unprepared.

Hullygully · 04/03/2011 10:45

Ban all trampolines.
Elf and safety gorn mad

caughtinanet · 04/03/2011 10:59

My DCs nursery had a trampoline sunk into the groud, it had very short legs so not too deep a hole needed and it was a great sucess. I never heard of any child being injured but I do see QS's point about older children suddenly jumping onto solid ground.

During the time my DCs where there they must have had more than one OFSTED so I assume it must be safe.

weegiemum · 04/03/2011 11:10

My dd2 has 6 monthly appointments about a hip condition with a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

EVERY TIME SHE CHECKS WE DON'T HAVE A TRAMPOLINE!!

She says she sees so many children exceptionally badly injured by trampolines, with or without nets, dug into the ground or not.

Part of it is my dd2 is not allowed to jump as part of her hip cnodition.

But the doctor says that if she could ban trampoline she could - she does upwards of 10 surgeries a week on children with complex fractures due to trampoline accidents.
