To not want mayday bank holiday to move to either March, April or October

I'm as patriotic as the next person but I actually like a day off in May when the weather has a reasonable chance if being nice.

I don't want to be forced to have a day off in early March (st David's day) or if you are English st Georges day in April, or Trafalgar day in October.

It's true that the May Day holiday only came in in 1978 (I know because I was 13 then...) though I have at least 2 old-lefty-hippy mates who always take a day off on May 1st (OK, partly because they are Morris dancers too).

They sould leave May Day alone so that we can dance around the Maypole if we want. If people want to protest/march they will bank holiday or not.

We do need another BH between the end of August and Christmas because not every parent gets the October half term off. Trafalgar Day tagged onto half term would be great.

It's just the tories having another stab at abolishing the Workers' Day! Grin I thought I remembered them having a try at this before - thanks, Jennai.

Seriously though, I can't see that having it in Oct will encourage people to go to touristy places and splash the cash. It's a shame that so many fall in spring, but at least they're mostly sort of 'natural' and not contrived, wheras just moving the may one arbitrarily will be ... Odd.

I'd probably enjoy having April 23rd off for St George's, if anyone could convince me that there are Traditional Things to do in England on St George's Day. A compulsory beer/folk festival with Morris, maybe? Grin

I've always thought that a holiday in October would be good, just to break up that long slog from August to Christmas. The May Day holiday is right after Easter in some years, so I would be quite happy to swap.

it is good, the October one! Smile
