To not have said anything

I have a relatively new boss and to be honest, he is a crap boss. The only interaction he instigates is to criticise, there is no teamwork, no team meetings, no forward planning - everything is a reaction after the event.

I have an excellent colleague who I supervise. We have an excellent working relationship and do the best we can in the circumstances, raising issues with the boss as and when they come to light - including forward planning issues. This is, in part, the problem. I think he resents us as he sees us as a threat. We are going to him with issues that he should have a handle on but it hasn't even crossed his mind.

So today he gives me some work to process. I duly do it in the same way as always. I like to double-check, and when I do this I notice that it hasn't fully worked. The only obvious explanation (as the system is fully functioning with no known issues) is that he has decided to change the access I get in the computer system which means a job that nneds two people to do, and there are currently only two people that have the authority to do this - him and me - now cannot be completed. He has not mentioned changing any settings to me.

I am not back at work till Wednesday next week. The fact that this work has not been fully processed on the system effectively means that my excellent colleague will end up having to field phone calls and it will create more work for her. But if I mention it to my boss then a) I am once again getting him out of a hole that he has created and b) It will make him resent me even more.

AIBU to have left work today without saying anything?

Having read that back, I know IABU. :( But I think my colleague would agree with my decision, if that helps.

The work can still be done, and it won't affect anyone other than us to any significant degree, if that helps.

Who is his line manager?

Discuss your concerns with that person. To have not said anything may cause resentment from your colleague.

BooyFuckingHoo · 03/03/2011 18:44

yes YABU

he will blame you anyway for the work not being done as he gave it to you. if tehre was a problem requiring his authorisation you should have been professional and sought his authorisation. you have created extra work for a colleague you say you have an excellent working relationship with. you have been petty at the expense of your colleague who had nothing to do with teh work today.

LionRock · 03/03/2011 18:45

No, but when you return to work I'd suggest that you raise the issue as soon as you can with him. Simply state the facts: you can no longer do something that you used to be able to do. If he admits he requested the change and didn't tell you in advance, at least you know. You can respond by telling him how this will affect timescales to complete work. His decision. Otherwise, if he didn't request the change, hopefully the original settings can be reinstated.

Bluemoonrising · 03/03/2011 18:51

To clear things up a little - it requires two people to authorise the job, and it appears he has taken away my ability to do my half of that. No one else has the ability so the work cannot be done.

But yes, IABU.

well you should have spoken to him about it when you discovered the problem really.

mmsmum · 03/03/2011 18:55

YANBU I think I would go over his head or go to HR. They need to know this isn't working

LisaD1 · 03/03/2011 18:59

I think you should have raised this with him. If this is part of your role then your authority to process the jobs needs to be reinstated and if he is playing silly power games I would consider a word in the ear of HR!
