to expect not to be sent ebay items encrusted with sick?

so i seem to be finding the quality of things ebayers send out is sliding since buying stuff for baby due shortly

first was the cradel swing with bits of food and dust all over it (showing the as new condition advertised off to perfection) - kept that as it was easier to clean it than send it back

than there was the smoke coverd footmuff - that went back was from a non smoking home btw

then there was the bugaboo changing bag as new - with a big hole in the bottom!

now i got a bundle of excellent condition only worn once or twice items posted 3 weeks after sale and 1/4 were binworthy with stains immediatly the rest were musty smelling, bobbly and some were caked in sick ive done 4 loads of washing trying to some salvage items

aibu to think people should take more pride in what they send out i sell and all items are cleaned and checked before sending with faults listed i would be ashamed to send items out people felt they had to scub before using whilst claming they are in excellent condition

Ewww, no YADNBU. I sometimes sell my ds' old clothes/toys on Ebay when they've outgrown them, and I never sell anything that I wouldn't want for myself.
As a complete non smoking house I'd sniff a scent of cigarette smoke a mile off, however mild. I'd be completely disgusted if I bought something that whiffed of fags for my little ones, so you're def not being unreasonable.
As for crusted on stuff, that's just minging.
E-mail/message the seller first to try and get them to rectify the problem (eg refund), don't just go staright into negative without informing them of any problem though. Give them a chance to redeem themselves and if still no joy I'd be leaving negative.

nameinuse · 03/03/2011 20:07

well tbh id be a bit pissed at sending it all back after being soaked/washed and ironed (or binned) i didnt realise the full extent of it ALL being disgusting until i wa swashing each pile and i couldnt bear to have it sitting in my house in such a way

i thought you couldnt buy reusabkle nappies off ebay? thats disgusting

i have 2 dogs and clean up after their hair daily and dont let them help me with the washing and never have a problem with dogs hair/smell so i cant understand people who manage to let things get manky with dog hair

God that's grim, everything I sell on ebay is in immaculate condition, if not new it's recently washed, and most of the time I give things a spritz of fabric refresher before putting it in the mailing bag (nothing like getting a nice waft of clean laundry when you take something out of the packaging). Wouldn't dream of selling something that I wouldn't be happy to wear myself immediately.

I've only bought a couple of things from ebay, a ski suit for ds that was lovely hardly used and very clean and fresh, and a pair of shoes that were advertised as brand new which I suspect wasn't 100% true, but they were in almost new condition (tiny bit of wear on the sole) so I accepted it and didn't give negative feedback.

partyhats · 03/03/2011 20:17

Thats gross, you should leave them negative feedback. I would be too embarassed to send anyone anything that was smelly or dirty. I have sold quite a lot of dd's clothes on ebay and always wash them again and iron before posting. YANBU

mosschops30 · 03/03/2011 20:24

It's disgusting, I have just sold loads of my baby stuff on gumtree, I made sure it was all cleaned thoroughly before people collected and I even stole borrowed special cleaning tablets from work that we use to clean infected areas, so my pushchair was practically disinfected.

Why are people so gross

LoveBeingAKnockedUp · 03/03/2011 20:32

I think some people are just so desperate for the money tbh I've defo noticed a decline in standards but there are still good sellers put there.

nameinuse · 03/03/2011 20:36

in my area you can get a reusable nappies kit for about 10 quid real nappies project i think its called?

houseworkwhore · 03/03/2011 20:56

OP i have just sent you a private message about baby clothes

midori1999 · 03/03/2011 21:06

Gross!

I bravely bought my first ever second hand clothing item from ebay this week. (an Isabella Oliver Maternity wrap top) It came looking virtually brand new and spelling beautifully washed and of fabric conditioner. I am very pleased with it, but this story has really put me off buying anything else tbh.

suwoo · 03/03/2011 21:12

Some of us are prolific Ebay sellers who only sell clean things. Please don't be put off the whole of Ebay because some people have received a few skanky things. The fanny smelling jeans are high up on the scale of all things rank though. I have 1300 feedback, ALL positve. Yay me Wink

houseworkwhore · 03/03/2011 21:14

iv just started selling loads of my old baby stuff on there as theres just so much of it! doing well so far! loads of it has labels on still

Honeydragon · 03/03/2011 21:21

I've got some lovely stuff and ebay, and sold lovely stuff too.

I have also bought used nappies before and sold them, but on nappy forums and Mumsnet where I know they will be in good clean condition. I sold on my tots bots here as they had hardly been worn by dd at all as I kept using ds's old ones, saving the new ones for best to the point they never got used Confused Grin.

Unwashed clothes though is vile and really annoys me. A oversight ...fine. Obvious lack of care deserves neg feedback.

MsScarlett · 03/03/2011 21:24

YANBU! I got moat of my dd's stuff secondhand off freecycle. Granted, most of it needed a good clean but I didn't mind so much as it was free! And I don't feel guilty or a scrounger as I will put it back on freecycle and gave it away to someone else was I've finished with it! Grin

nameinuse · 03/03/2011 21:27

i always thought there should be like an ebay office were the seller sends then they check and send on to avoid issues like crap goods

obv this is far to complicated in reality thou Grin

YANBU I would leave the most awful feed back for them. I would actually be tempted to send it all back.

But TBH when places like Asda are selling new baby clothes very cheaply, e.g. packs of 3 sleep suits for £3.75 and packs of body suits for £2.50 I don't why people go to eBay for essentials. It can't be that much cheaper once you add postage to the mix.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 04/03/2011 11:26

YANBU - leave negative feedback for sure!

You've had a bad run, but it's not all like that. I brought most of DD's clothes/shoes etc off ebay for 3 years now and have had only 2 "bad un's"

solooovely · 04/03/2011 16:32

eeew dirty fanny!

theagedparent · 04/03/2011 16:35

Re the fanny smelling jeans, I didn't have to get my nose into the crotch to smell that smell, they really were that bad. Put them in the bin the left positive feedback Grin

MsScarlett · 05/03/2011 15:38

How awful that you would ever get baby stuff that stank of fag smoke. Their poor los' lungs Sad

gramercy · 05/03/2011 15:55

On the other hand there are the scamming buyers, too. I sold some of ds's baby clothes, hardly worn. Back comes a message saying they want their money back as the clothes are in a disgusting state or else they'll give me negative feedback. Ho hum.

And on another occasion I sold a Mini Boden coat - again in pristine condition - and the buyer said they wanted their money back as it was too big and they couldn't afford it in the first place as they were on benefits and would I want their child to starve. When I said I'd have to deduct postage and wanted the coat posted back recorded delivery, I got an e-mail saying the coat had knife slashes all over it [scared emoticon] ! I reported that person pretty quickly.

Cyclebump · 05/03/2011 16:13

YANBU

I bought my iCandy Cherry and a Pacapod changing bag and both were in excellent as-described condition. The Cherry was used but immaculate and the changing bag still had the tags on.

Unfortunately, some people are just nobheads. We've been lucky so far. It really posses me off when people lie on descriptions, grrrrrr

TuttoRhino · 05/03/2011 16:36

YANBU.

I've only really had good luck buying from ebay so far. I've bought three items that were not as described - a tshirt was more worn than expected and some 'new' reusable nappies were clearly not. I sent the nappies back for a refund. Wasn't the issue of buying second hand nappies, I've done plenty of that, just the price I paid was based on buying new.

I also bought the world's filthyist Maclaren. Was advertised in excellent condition and arrived covered in filth, complete with layers and layers of food crumbs. It was pick up only and my husband picked it up. I didn't see it till two weeks later, as I was out of the country. By that time, it was too late. My feedback mentioned the condition it was in. Two separate deep cleans later it was good to go.

I've always bought a lot of baby / kids clothes off ebay as I like the Scandi brands. They are very expensive new but they are such good quality that they can go through several kids and still look great. I don't mind paying a bit more for second hand clothes than buying new from places like Primark or supermarkets. I find the cheap stuff goes bobbly and out of shape really quickly. It will only last one child.

I've only sold one thing so far - my old pram - and I was scrubbing the wheel wells with a toothbrush before I posted it out.
