...or do MBT shoes just look flipping odd?

Am thinking about investing in a pair to regain condition after breaking my ankle and being sofa-bound for 7 weeks (think flabby tummy). Been looking at MBT shoes and wondering if they might be any good, but they just look damned ODD to me. Anyone got them? Are they worth looking odd for?

I have fitflops. I love them. MBT did look odd to me, and a bit too much money. So, I'm on the fence, because they are meant to be ace.

duchesse · 03/03/2011 13:31

I wonder if MBT shoes are actually safe for someone who's just broken an ankle. The claims are good in the case of ankle injuries, but do they mean fractures as well I wonder?

Going to google fitflops now, MissV!

Blush 2 pairs of fitflops over here. I am with MissVerinder on this one. Go try them on though and see if they are for you - I felt like I was trying to walk on the moon with MBTs!!!

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 03/03/2011 13:35

They look VERY odd indeed. But I love them! I've had mine 4 years and they are the most comfortable thing EVER. I wish I could wear them all the time, but they look a little strange with my smart work clothes and only heels will do for that.

Katiepoes · 03/03/2011 13:37

They are hideous. Plus my Mum ingured her hip walking n the wretched things - she swears by the fitflops though.

duchesse · 03/03/2011 13:38

Ah return - you have them! Do you know if they come up wide and/or larger than normal? I have feet like boats quite wide feet.

OP posts:
TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 03/03/2011 13:42

I would say they are fairly wide, because I also have feet wider than they are long and they fit, with room. Having said that, mine are slightly big because they don't actually make them smaller than a size 3, and I wear a 2.5! Try them. Seriously. Hideous: yes. But there's definitely a place for them!

I have FitFlops too, and adore them, but it really and truly isn't warm enough for those outside at the moment.

blackcurrants · 03/03/2011 13:42

They look VERY odd. They're also the only type of shoe that is comfy for me to walk in (I have plantar fasciitis and argh physio and stretching and sleeping with my feet in splints still only 'manages' it) - I bought my first pair five years ago, wore them till they fell apart, and am on pair 2 now. They're blardy expensive but for all day every day (and I walk about 4 miles a day when I add dog and commute distances) it works out ok.

I wish they were more glam, but foot pain is a great motivator for me to be all "meh, who cares what my feet look like?" - even if I don't mean it all the time!

I wear fitflops in the summer when it's v. hot. Wore them all last year while extremely pregnant - bliss!

slowshow · 03/03/2011 13:51

MBTs aren't just odd, they're fugly. They tend to make people walk in a peculiar, lolloping way as well.

stainesmassif · 03/03/2011 13:55

I love mine and quite like the way they appear to lengthen my legs. This is because I don't wear heels though.

However, I only wear them with extra long trousers to minimise the fugliness. They do work.

duchesse · 03/03/2011 16:04

Quick qestion for those of you who own them: Do they actually make you more unstable when you walk in them?

OP posts:
blackcurrants · 03/03/2011 16:09

Duchesse: yes, especially at first, but you learn to stabilize yourself (which is the point - engaging more muscles, etc). For example, I walk the dog with DS in the baby carrier and wear mine, and don't notice it.

Aseaandthreestars · 03/03/2011 16:14

I wear them and yes, they do make me feel more unstable - I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, so I'm already fairly unstable.

They can look a bit silly, but when i wear them they strengthen my legs up and I must burn more calories when I wear them as I tend to drop a pound or two. I can't wear them all the time due to the EDS so wearing them means I'm feeling fairly strong anyway.

lalalonglegs · 03/03/2011 16:37

I have a pair - got them because my back felt so wonky after my last pregnancy and I do think they helped strengthen my posture. I only ever wear them with trousers, preferably very long wide legged ones so they don't show up so much. My FIL bought some (which surprised me as he's not at all faddy) - he's a real fan now and I don't really notice them on him.

duchesse · 04/03/2011 10:06

I'm thinking they wouldn't be such a good idea so soon after a fracture- I broke it falling over in the first place!!

OP posts:
Rabat · 04/03/2011 11:34

I have them for work. Yes, they look a bit odd but I prefer it to the back/feet pain I was having (teacher). Three of my colleagues have them, too. I have the black Mary Jane type and only ever wear them with trousers. I don't feel unstable at all when I walk in them.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 04/03/2011 11:37

They look pretty ridiculous tbf! Buuuuuuut, if you have plantar fasciitis then MBTs and Fitflops are gifts from heaven!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 04/03/2011 11:39

They are/were a status symbol at DDs last school due their hideous expense.

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 04/03/2011 13:52

I bought a pair when I was working in a shop and standing all day - my feet hurt like hell no matter which shoes I wore. With the MBT they didn't hurt at all. They look mad, though. My colleague used to laugh at me and my 'kangaroo shoes'Grin

They are also the only shoes I've encountered so far who come not only in half of a size, but a third of a size, so they fit really well.

mrswishywashy · 04/03/2011 15:15

Snap I was just thinking whether I should get a pair too but not too sure either cos of my archillies injury - have pyhsio next week so will ask them there.

Woohoo for been out of cast although am finding it hard to actually walk and have a lot of swelling (and the dead skin is disgusting). But I have to walk without crutches over weekend as have job interview on Monday and start work on Tuesday!

duchesse · 04/03/2011 15:32

I've been out of plaster for 2.5 weeks now Mrs W, and the tendons in the ankle are still very odd-feeling. I have physio next week so shall ask them about mbt shoes too.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 04/03/2011 15:50

I love my MBT's. As summer is approaching I'd get a pair of the sandles as they look less odd IMO. (I'm very excited that I'll be getting my MBT sandals out as soon as possible).

Vallhala · 04/03/2011 15:59

In comparison to THESE MBT shoes look positively elegant. :o

duchesse · 04/03/2011 16:01

OMFG Valhalla!! Those are sooo the shoes for my bushman 17 yo DS. Exactly what I was looking for for him for his gap year! Thank you.
