"you need to tear basil leaves, not chop them". What possible difference does it make except to make you look like a pretentious twunt.
Also, rubbing a garlc clove on bread. Bollocks does that give any flavour. Either chop up garlic and make proper garlicky bruschetta or do without.

I'm with kreecherlivesupstairs cooking bullshit is never a good idea. Let's forget about the smell for a moment, I can't imagine it would taste very good.

if you tear leaves you are tearing into the leaf as well as acrossit, this creates a larger "cut" surface and more basil oil is exuded giving a fuller flavour.

We have garlic a lot and are probably immune to the suble flavour rubbing with a cut clove imparts(must be fresh, fat and juicy - two weeks in the salad drawer won't do), daughter's (ex) boyfriend hated garlic and could taste rubbed over toast even with cheese, tomatoes and basil on top.
