AuntiePickleBottom · 01/03/2011 20:43

my thinking is that i will only wear it once, so why pay all that money on a dress

squeakytoy · 01/03/2011 20:45

I would.. but hire prices are bloody extortionate too.. and dont forget to take out insurance, as I guarantee it will end up with something spilled on it..

Mine was bought, but by the end of the day looked a disgrace... :D

Rhinestone · 01/03/2011 20:46

Well I completely agree but then I spent less than £100 on mine! Your wedding, it's up to you. And think how much more money you'll have to put towards champagne on the honeymoon!

AuntiePickleBottom · 01/03/2011 20:48

where did you get a dress that cheap

OP posts:
Rhinestone · 01/03/2011 20:49

Well it wasn't a 'proper' wedding dress! It was just a really nice dress from Coast and I wore it to get married in so it's my wedding dress!

Rhinestone · 01/03/2011 20:50

Although some of the Red Cross charity shops have a wedding dress section with 'proper' wedding dresses that are massively cheaper than buying new. They are in v good condition too.

Personally I would feel sad if a daughter of ours wanted to spend a huge amount of money on her wedding dress, that she or we could not afford. so, OP YANBU.

UANBU however when I looked into renting a dress, the only ones I could find would have been 1.5k upwards to buy, therefore hiring was £300 plus, by the time alteratons had been done and insurance paid they were talking upwards of £500. Bought my dress for £400 in the sale. By all means rent but always look into what they are charging for the extras.

noodle69 · 01/03/2011 21:04

I got a proper wedding dress from BHS wedding range for £200. I still have it boxed under the bed.

CMOTdibbler · 01/03/2011 21:06

I'd buy one off ebay, then sell it after - it'll be cheaper than renting

I didn't have a 'traditional dress', but I've still not really even looked at my wedding clothes since the day.

Why people shell out £1000s is beyond me.

Go for what you want, and tell anyone who negatively comments to fuck off without a second breath Grin

AuntiePickleBottom · 01/03/2011 21:14

size 16 in jeans, but that to take into account for my mummy tummy so no idea when it comes to dresses

I couldn't find wedding dress hire anywhere. I doubt they would let people keep altering it would they? And if not it wouldn't fit properly. You are better off looking for cheaper dresses. Mine was £395 and was gorgeous but my dressmaker (who made my coat) said she would have done the same for less money.

suwoo · 01/03/2011 21:20

I had a 'proper' wedding dress too. It was the shop sample and was £200.

MissyMooBag78 · 01/03/2011 21:22

YANBU, though Debenhams are fantastic for wedding dresses!!

I bought mine in a sale there for a whole £27.50 Grin

Best of luck Smile

MollysChambers · 01/03/2011 21:22

YANBU.

Although Monsoon have lovely wedding dresses at very reasonable prices.

here

HaveToWearHeels · 01/03/2011 21:28

Have you looked at BHS for bridal wear, they have a fantastic dress on there in the new season range.

issey6cats · 01/03/2011 21:35

i was lucky there was a wedding shop closing down at the time i was looking for a dress and i got an ex hire dress for £50 and altered it to fit me, i took the overblown sleeves off it shortened it and took half the meringue netting out from under it and on the day it looked fab, my friend got hers off e bay from a chinese seller for about £100 and she looked lovely

I bought mine for £20 and I loved it.

It had been reduced from £150, and was a ballgown rather than a wedding dress, but it was exactly what I wanted.

givemeaclue · 02/03/2011 10:01

oxfam (look online) do wedding dresses - they have special wedding dress shops for recycled wedding dresses and a section of their website.

MorticiaAddams · 02/03/2011 10:18

I hired mine, I have no idea why people buy the expensive dresses just to leave them hanging around doing nothing for years.
