I just did some laundry and going through it all it hit me that i am jealous of my 6 year old DD's wardrobe.

I sat down to MN and so reached for my specsaver specials. As i was putting them on i was reminded of the fact that i have to collect DS new pair tomorrow. A gorgeous pair of Jasper conrans with an equally designer price tag.

My children are better dressed than me.

Would you prefer it the other way around?

Anonymousbird · 01/03/2011 19:34

YANBU, because IANBU, I think this all the time!

They also have hair cuts, regular as clock work, every 6 weeks without fail. I haven't been for nearly 5 months and look like a rag tail.

worraliberty · 01/03/2011 19:34

Well why don't you spend some money on yourself then? Or does the money for your kid's stuff come from another family member?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 01/03/2011 19:35

Do something to change the situation then :) DCs need to see mum respecting herself too.

ThreIsNoSpoon · 01/03/2011 19:38

But isnt that part of being a parent? My childrens have new shoes and clothes. All of my stuff is from charity shops.

They get their hair cut, I havent had mine even LOOKED at by a hairdresser in over 3 years.

they get presents for their birthdays, DH and I dont.

They eat well, but if we are short I go without.

If money is tight, I would prefer that they got stuff rather than me. It is not matyrdom it is part of being a parent and caring for those you love and bring into the world. We ave had our time and now it is theirs. We will have years once they leave home, so a few years sacrificing is worth it.

Mamaz0n · 01/03/2011 19:41

I don't think i look that rough. I wish i could wear the stuff DD does. But she is young and trendy, I am a fat old duffer.

DS gets a discount on his glasses so they are much much cheaper than adult ones, so he can get super duper designer ones cheaper than i can get the coke bottle bottom ones.

I want to be young and trendy and get thinsg cheap Grin

Fair enough if money is tight. Is it wise, though, to spoil them when you go without? If you think spending money is about "worth" then shouldn't it be that you are worth it too and look after yourself? Why wouldn't you buy them clothes from charity shops and cut their own hair too if money is that tight?

worraliberty · 01/03/2011 19:42

Clothes don't have to be expensive and with a little care you can look good.

fedupofnamechanging · 01/03/2011 19:43

I am feeling fat and ugly at the moment. My nice clothes don't fit me any more and I won't buy anything new because I want to get back into my old stuff.

I like shopping though and am enjoying buying my DD lovely clothes. it is true though, that she has much better stuff than me. After 3 boys it is nice to buy girls clothes as well as football boots and sports tops!

Wook · 01/03/2011 19:44

It's the bright colours, pinafore dresses and bloomers I especially envy! Oh and spots and stripes together. And two plaits in the hair.
But I think I would look a bit bonkers tbh
Tempted to buy the JonnieB pixie boots in the sale though, even though I am nearer 40 than 14

Wook · 01/03/2011 19:45

Sorry OP didn't mean to bring in flippant note!

I have never ever taken kids to have a paid hair cut though, that seems like a major waste of cash- puddingbowl and kitchen scissors jobs here

girliefriend · 01/03/2011 19:46

No YANBU, I think this all the time as well, my dd has got some really nice clothes and mine are all very old and craggy!!! I now also find whenever I go shopping for myself I end up being drawn to the kids section-I find buying nice clothes for dd is more satisfying than for myself, sad I know!!!

Sirzy · 01/03/2011 19:46

DS has better clothes than me but I would have it no other way! I prefer buying clothes for him than me now!

That said the only thing I do "splash out on" for me is glasses as I wear them all the time I want the right pair which is comfy!

Mamaz0n · 01/03/2011 19:52

yes i do that too

Go out to get myself something, get totally dispondant as its all horrible and saggy and tent like in my size. So go and have a look at stuff for the DC instead.

My reading glasses are from specsavers and they were cheap at 45 modern too. I didnt like the expensive ones. One thing I always pay money for is my glasses as I wear them all the time.

FabbyChic · 01/03/2011 19:54

Sorry should add my everyday ones are designer for distance.

ThreIsNoSpoon · 01/03/2011 19:58

Cristina - no, not spoiling, deffo no money for that! I meant day to day stuff. And the children are young enough to be so self centred they dont notice! Grin

inkyfingers · 01/03/2011 20:10

Can't understand why people would spend more on the kids and in the process go without. why is it 'their time'. Maybe they should know that money is for everyone to share. If they think they're special cos of the new clothes, they'll rightly assume you're not special because you look a mess and never buy new clothes. Really silly if kids are too young to be v. bothered about new clothes. Little prince/princess syndrome going on!

BlueCollie · 01/03/2011 20:25

My DS dresses better than me but that's because I'm too fat for most of my clothes and too skint to buy new ones. He however, has lovely relatives who have bought him nice clothes Grin

Mamaz0n · 01/03/2011 20:25

Just to clarify, i don't dress like a bag lady and i do buy myself things. of course.

Its not that i dont have nice things. its just that their stuff is better.
