to not eat stinky chicken??

auntpolly · 28/02/2011 19:47

Said chicken has been in the oven for an hour (DH and I eat together when he gets back from work) and it is still stinking out the flat. It's well within date (and cornfed, not sure if it matters) and smelt like drains when I opened it.

DH thinks we should eat it because it is in date and expensive, I am dry heaving. Maybe I should take the wrapper back to Sainsbury's and make them smell it?

Smelled like drains? Shock

Offer it to your cat/dog if you have one. If they run away then there's your answer.

I wouldn't eat it, so what it was expensive!

squeakytoy · 28/02/2011 19:49

even it is within its date it can still be off if it hasnt been stored correctly..

you will be very ill if you eat it and I cant believe you are even contemplating eating it..

belledechocchipcookie · 28/02/2011 19:49

It needs throwing away. It's irrelevant that it's within date. Some do smell a little (I started a thread about this a few weeks ago), it's the plastic casing apparantly and should go once it's starting to cook. Your chuck sounds off though. If your DH wants to eat it and won't listen then get the buckets out. I wouldn't eat it though.

YANBU

And I will normally ignore any kind of dates on food!

thebountymuncher · 28/02/2011 19:52

I'm guessing it cost about £9 ish?

If you'd hand that over to not be sick, then there's your answer Wink

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 28/02/2011 19:53

I'm sure you can get a refund.

KurriKurri · 28/02/2011 19:53

Chuck it. Take the wrapper back to Sainsbury's and they should give you double your money back - that's their usual policy.

saffy85 · 28/02/2011 19:54

Eww don't eat it! I'd rather waste a chicken, expensive or otherwise than get food poisoning from it!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 28/02/2011 19:55

We had the same thing with a cornfed sainsbury's chicken. In date, smelled borderline when we opened it (I know what you mean about drains) but then once in the oven it smalled worse and worse.

Email Sainsbury's with your nectar card number, state the cost of the chicken and ask them to refund that in points to your card. I did this and didn't have to go back with proof of purchase, I just gave the date that I'd bought it (if you've got a nectar card they'll be able to check details anyway if they want).

pigletmania · 28/02/2011 19:55

YABU chuck it out now! Chicken should not smell like drains, I would rather chuck it out than be sick ewwwww.

laosvher · 28/02/2011 19:56

I read the title as 'to not eat stinky children' :o
I wouldn't eat it, yanbu
yes, take it back to Sainbo's, worth trying to get your money back

susall · 28/02/2011 19:59

My mums saying with chicken is 'if in doubt chuck it out', not worth the sickness if you ask me.

manticlimactic · 28/02/2011 20:00

Let him eat it if he wants Hmm. Make it clear that you won't be nurse-maiding him though Grin

JarethTheGoblinKing · 28/02/2011 20:03

OP

Here's a copy of my email to Sainsbury's.

I recently purchased whole chicken from the Sainsbury's store. It was purchased on Sunday 23rd Nov, and had a use by date of 27th Nov (today). It has been refrigerated at below 5ºC, but when I got it out of the fridge last night for dinner, it had obviously gone bad, and it smelled really awful.

I do not have the original receipt, but perhaps you could check our nectar card for the purchase details.

The nectar card number is 9**0 and is in the name of DH (my partner).

Please could you refund the value of the chicken in nectar points to this card?

Kindest regards,
Jareth

oh yes, and the email address is [email protected]

rachelkarengreene · 28/02/2011 20:07

Yuk, bin it.

Jareth You are so sweet to go to the trouble of copying the email etc, MNers get a bad rap sometimes but that was lovely Smile

auntpolly · 28/02/2011 20:07

DH still wants to eat it even though I have passed on your helpful suggestions! He is from Yorkshire though Grin

I am going to take the wrapper back to Sainsbury's. I hope he doesn't expect me to rub his back all night while he hurls into the toilet Hmm

I'm having pasta.

harrap · 28/02/2011 20:10

nooooo I've had food poisoning from stinky chicken-took a chance, didn't want to waste money- will never do that again, was grim.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 28/02/2011 20:11

Aww, you're welcome! Grin
(and thank you rachelkarengreene)

Don't let your DH eat it! Tell him you'll get the money back.. I wouldn't give off chicken to the dog, let alone my DH..

squeakytoy · 28/02/2011 20:13

He is a prat. Seriously he is.

Fourleaf · 28/02/2011 20:16

Lol at DH still wants to eat it.
YANBU of course.

KurriKurri · 28/02/2011 20:23

auntpolly - my DH is a microbioligist he specialises in food born pathogens. He says do not eat the chicken.

Coming from Yorkshire is irrelevant - he won't care where he comes from when he's sitting on the toilet and holding a bowl because something's coming out of every orifice. Actually he probably won't make it as far as the toilet before he has diarrhoea. The kinds of food poisoning you get from chicken are figuratively and literally shit.

KurriKurri · 28/02/2011 20:23

he can spell microbiologist - I apparently can't.
