To consider changing jobs to a much lower grade and pay

For an easier life? Has anyone done this?...it would be a huge step back progression-wise too.
Anyone regretted it?

I used to be a marketing manager - now I am a lowly part time pre school worker!!

I don't regret it, I made the decision for the sake of my family and that is still the right decision, however...
I am now in a job I hate - I love working with the kids, but sadly that is the most adult conversation I have while I am at work. without sounding snobbish I am very aware that my level of education is vastly different to the people I work with and I find this hard. (So hard that I am now registering to become a childminder)

Just beware that you may not be working with like minded people anymore if you can put up with that then fine - go for it.
IMO family is more important than a job.

It will be in my same profession but i will be working at the level of people who have been post graduation 1-3 years when i have 20 years up my sleeve. Ideally I should be applying to be their manager lol but Im after an easier life and leaving work at the door.

I tried this for a while, but found it hard to adjust. The main problem was my manager was not very good at her job and I found it hard to report to someone with less experience than me.

After 6 months I applied for a job at my old level and although it is stressful, and difficult to juggle between work and family, I still prefer it to the more junior role.

My husband did this and never regretted it...

Home life first ....work life ...last.

I think about doing this all the time. Its about your quality of life isn't it. I take it you hate your job. Lifes to short to not be happy in your work

giveitago · 28/02/2011 19:52

Erm - I've done it - don't find it like super as I don't find my work lowly (I'd never think of anyone looking after my dcs as lowly actually). I find it appropriate to my 'salary' - and I chose to do it.

But what I find hard is the management - very inexperienced and I could easily do the job of two big grades higher. HOWEVER, it's part time, my hours are pretty standard and walk away from work with nothing going on in my head and arrive home refreshed and ready to drop into the mothering role so I'm grateful for that.

I'd recommend it only if you can afford and don't mind doing work of a lower grade.

mrsbacchus · 28/02/2011 19:54

I did, best decision i ever made, its fantastic to be able to leave problems behind at work now. However, i think it only works if you are sure you can afford it or you are only swapping one set of stresses for another.

Oh but watch it op - lower grade doesn't automatically mean easier life.

I have up work completely to try and start a family (ie we were on IVF waiting list and I felt the pressure). It worked. I found a job when ds was 15 months old and at that point I hadn't worked for about 3 years. Not bad salary and was lower grade but lower stress? Nope. Less hassle. Nope? Lots of unpaid overtime - hell, yes.

If you love having a great job then stick to it. I wasn't that fussed - just wanted and easier life so I could concentrate on ds when at home - it's taken a while and a HUGE pay cut but I'm there now. I do get frustrated but I'd rather be like this than feeling my job gets in the way completely of being the mum I want to be.

I'd like to get back to a bigger job but given that when ds starts secondary school I'll be well into my 50's I'm well and truly screwed anyway - so I'm just going to cruise into my 50's and 60's and tighten my belt to allow it to happen.

Best of luck OP.
