to think that MN's forum is massively crap for having bad quoting facilities?

i get terribly lost in long threads because people all use their own way to quote other bits of people;s posts?

AIBU to sigh and wonder why MN doesn't add a better quoting thing, automatically, on posts?

MN should add a little button next to each post (next to the report link) saying "quote", and then it should take you to the normal Reply page automatically, with the poster's name in bold, and a little border around the bit you've quoted

it would make inter-post communication and logical following of threads much easier

i surely can't the only one to have suggested this? or is there some facility there which we've all not using?

so AIBU to think that MN's forum quoting (or lack of) is supremely crap?

NetworkGuy

It is a considerable aid to clarity, knowing precisely which part of a post is under scrutiny,

Quite.

I think that the issue is that providing highly accessible quoting facility often results in a QuoteFest with a low SNR, and high clutter.

Fortunately, for those who like the odd [sic] quote, there are currently sufficient resources extant to facilitate it.

I suppose one might (at the risk of offending some posters) class it as an IQ test. You can quote if you wish, but will need to make your own arrangements ! :)

Unfortunately it still needs some education at MNHQ, in the form of a kuta (you can do that, Maryz, no doubt) to get them to prune how much they quote or fix the facility to not include whole posts if they are unable to edit once they click 'Quote Post' (or whatever they see).

If they can do neither, then they should abstain (you know who you are!)

I quite like the system here and dislike the quote within a quote thing on other boards. When it's too easy to quote the tendency is to do it all the time.

If I want to quote I just put quotation marks and put the sentence in italics, and put the name of the poster in bold. It's not that hard.

I know some forum systems that refuse to post a message that contains a quote if there's more quoted text than new text.

Yes, a signal-to-noise ratio is quite a good test.

On that basis some posts made by Justine in Site Stuff would have been refused as whole posts were being quoted.

It really irritates me not having a quote function, it is there on the other forums I use and it makes life so much simpler to keep track
