To leave bad feedback?

I haven't used e-bay all that much so I'm not sure what I should do.

I only looked at seller's overall rating instead of the detailed feedback before buying a buggy from them, overall score was good and I didn't think to check any further.

I went to collect the buggy and the flat absolutely stank of smoke, I have friends (without DC) who smoke indoors and their houses are nothing like this rank - it was totally overpowering. The buggy itself is a tiny bit musty smelling (I guess it's mainly been stored in communal entrance hallway or outside so it hasn't had a chance to get smoky) but apart from that is in pristine condition.

The sellers detailed feedback does have a bad rating for a cot mattress which smelt of smoke.

I don't know whether really I should leave good feedback as the item I bought is in good condition and my buying experience was fine.

I am leaning towards leaving bad feedback so other buyers would be aware but I'm not sure if this is unfair when it didn't effect me personally.

In part I think I want to leave bad feedback just because I'm disgusted that anyone could smoke that much in a flat with their DC. Sad Angry Smoking enough around a cot to leave it stinking is just vile and the flat stank enough that I don't doubt the accuracy of the buyer's feedback.

So AIBU?

Yes, YABU. As you say, the item you bought is in good condition. And presumably you could have changed your mind or found a compromise if you weren't satisfied. You can't just leave negative feedback because you disapprove of their lifestyle.

rey · 26/02/2011 22:31

No definately not ie YADNBU!

SeeJaneKick · 26/02/2011 22:32

Say "Buggy smelt musty and house is a smoking house"

Definately.

madamy · 26/02/2011 22:32

You absolutely cannot leave bad feedback if the condition of the buggy etc is good. You are judging the life choices of the seller and this is none of your business and nothing to do with the item/s they are selling.

thisisyesterday · 26/02/2011 22:34

yabu to base your feedback on the state of their flat, yes

you MUST do it on your purchase and nothing else.you say it is in pristine condition... so you shouldn't be leaving bad feedback

pigletmania · 26/02/2011 22:34

YABU, you rate the seller on the item, not their lifestyle! The buggy was how it was described in the listing right! it did not smell of smoke right! it is fit for the purpose its intended for right! Then the seller should get a positive rating from you.

Honeydragon · 26/02/2011 22:34

if they described the item from a smoke free home uanbu...if they didn't then you should leave feedback based on your item and buying experience not the potential experience of others.

curlymama · 26/02/2011 22:34

I don't use ebay much, but I would have thought that you should only leave bad feedback if they messed you around with the payments or collection, or if the item was not as described.

If the smell bothered you, you should have asked before you bought. And you say it doesn't even smell of smoke, so what would you even write?

pigletmania · 26/02/2011 22:37

The buggy only smelt musty, not of smoke, so imo musty meants dusty and mabey a little damp.

hissymissy · 26/02/2011 22:37

If the buggy is in a good condition, but smells a bit, you could give a good overall rating, but note that it smelt. But you also have to take into consideration the price etc... Was it good value? Perhaps if it is a bargain, the smell is rather a minor point and not worth commenting.

rey · 26/02/2011 22:38

I'm assuming that you would leave bad comment regarding the smoke smell on baby item and then add that everything else was good that way it is fair and you can feel fair in your remarks and go on to look out for non-smokers items in future.

AgentZigzag · 26/02/2011 22:40

I agree that what you describe isn't enough to leave negative feedback.

Like others have said, you can't leave it just because you're making a judgement about their lifestyle.

This is what I hate about ebay now, sellers have no comeback whatsoever when buyers decide to randomly leave you negatives when you've given them good service.

It comes from someone's home and not a sterile bubble, if you buy from ebay you have to accept that.

Vallhala · 26/02/2011 22:41

YABU and would be abusing the ebay system. Feedback is not there for you to cast judgement on a seller's lifestyle regardless of how much you disapprove of it.

Wook · 26/02/2011 22:42

YABU to leave bad feedback if the item was fine- that's not in the spirit of things. YANBU if the item was described as from a smoke free home.
Mind you, I am soft as I have had some very stinky things and just accepted it and put them in the wash. This was clothes though and not for dcs. Smokers have literally no idea how much they stink, and will only realise when they give up - then they will be amazed at how much smokers reek when they re enter the room, etc

JojoLapin · 26/02/2011 22:43

I think it would BU and v unfair as the item you bought was in good condition. Smoking so much with DCs around is of course not on but I agree with pozzled, e-bay feedbacks should only be about the product sold.

eviscerateyourmemory · 26/02/2011 22:43

YABU

Maybe they had left the buggy out in the hallway on account of the other feedback?

You cant give a negative for their lifestyle.

Tryharder · 26/02/2011 22:43

Well obviously YABU - can't believe you are asking. You say that the buggy is in good condition and doesn't smell of smoke so I see no reason why you would leave bad feedback.

You are judging them because they smoke and have children. Not nice but none of your business.

Did the listing say that the buggy came from a smoke free household? If so, you could consider marking them down. The golden rule of ebay is that if there is no mention of the item coming from a smoke free household, then assume that they smoke!

roadbackhome · 26/02/2011 22:49

I'm fairly new to e-bay so wasn't sure, it seems unfair that future buyers have minimal warning, looks like IABU though.

Lucyinthepie · 26/02/2011 22:50

Of course you shouldn't leave bad feedback, what on earth are you talking about? You had a good buying experience, that is what you are supposed to leave feedback about. If you leave bad feedback they will be entitled to take up a case with EBay to get it retracted by the way.

roadbackhome · 26/02/2011 22:52

Musty smell could well be febrezed/aired smoke though it's just a bit off rather than distinct nicotine, my sense of smell isn't brilliant so I might get someone else to have a sniff before making a final decision.

Judging parents who smoke is one thing but leaving bad feedback for a fair transaction is mean spirited, IMO

MorticiaAddams · 26/02/2011 23:16

YABVU. They didn't state it was from a smoke free home and not only did you not ask but you took the pushchair away without mentioning it to them.

How on earth can you justify negative feedback?
