Why attach a 'D'?

I'm just wondering why we don't just refer to d, s, h, c, etc. on here.

The only application of the letter d I have seen is removing it when dh is being annoying.

I have no objection to the d, but not sure of its use?

It's fairly common among forums

HettyAmaretti · 25/02/2011 15:25

'tis common usage all of t'internet.

Annoying and twee, but standard.

HeathcliffMoorland · 25/02/2011 15:25

I know, I just don't get it.

Two intials stand out a bit better than one?

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 15:27

I've never seen DH, DD, etc anywhere else. Mind you I don't visit very many forums apart from a couple of music ones.

Diablo82 · 25/02/2011 15:36

TBH I find the addition of "d" a bit nauseating. I love my husband dearly, but am able to refer to him in conversation without prefacing it with "d" in real life.

Sarsaparilllla · 25/02/2011 15:38

I've never seen it anywhere else on the internet, OH I think it common everywhere but I've only seen the D on here, I think it's a bit twee too

lololizzy · 25/02/2011 15:44

it is horribly twee, i tried not to use it when first on MN but argghhh i've been MN'd !!! Smile
there are times though, when DP is anything but and i would rather write PITAP Grin

WhensBedtime · 25/02/2011 15:47

I think Poppyknot has nailed it, actually. They are really twee abbreviations, though!

poppyknot · 25/02/2011 15:58

Thanks Whens!

M for my would seem a bit possessive. And as with other intials-standing-for-things (they are called Initialisms - I have just learned a new word!!!) you hopefully soon forget what the component words are.... ISA, ITV, IBM anyone?

So indoctrimated am I that I sometimes forget and find myself DHing in emails......

God, I am overthinking this. Smile

HettyAmaretti · 25/02/2011 16:02

Yup, I think Poppy is right too.

I'm afraid I also often have to edit emails for DP etc. In my mind it's shorthand for their names.

PaperView · 25/02/2011 16:04

You can interchange the meaning of the D though Grin

DurhamDurham · 25/02/2011 16:05

I like to think that the 'd' stands for dreaded, dreary, dismal, disgusting, demented or disgraceful. I apply the most suitable one depending on which member of the family I am discussing Grin

ShowOfHands · 25/02/2011 16:06

It doesn't mean 'darling/dear' once you're used to it. 'DH' just means person to whom poster is married.

Two letters infinitely more readable than one.

Sounds a bit algebraic like that......

NinkyNonker · 25/02/2011 16:52

I was about to say what Maryz said...so I agree with her!
