to expect the length of washing machine cycles to be in the instruction book?

Trying to research washing machines. I would like to know how long the cycle is on a 30degree and 40 degree wash with or without prewash. why do the manufacturers think that this is not important information that you may want to know before you buy the machine?

So can you help. what machine have you got and how long does it take to wash?

It may well depend on how hot your "hot" water is when you start the wash.

FabbyChic · 25/02/2011 12:20

Considering all new washing machines are now cold fill only, all the water that goes in to start with is cold, and the washing machine heats it up.

sayithowitis · 25/02/2011 12:24

my machine has several programmes at those temperatures and they all vary in length depending on the fabric that is being washed. A 30 degree without pre wash can be as little as 30 minutes or as long as 1h 10m with prewash. 4o degrees goes from 40 minutes to 1h 40m depending on whether there is a pre wash. There is a display on the front panel so that when I've selected the combinations I want, (tempereature, pre wash, spin, dry time etc) tells me how long it will take.

RachelHRD · 25/02/2011 12:27

We have an AEG machine which has an LED display showing cycle lengths and counting them down which is really useful as you know how long the cycle has left.

The synthetics wash at 40 degress is 1 hour 20 minutes

Bonsoir · 25/02/2011 12:28

My machine adjusts the length of the cycle as it progresses, according to weight, soapiness etc - so we don't know in advance how long it is going to last.

blackeyedsusan · 25/02/2011 12:37

there is a hell of a lot of difference between 47 mins 40 degree wash on my current machine (give or take 5 mins for variations as above) and 1 hour 40 minutes quoted for one of the machines we haave looked t(gve no info for other wash cycles though. trying to find new machine with shortish washes and want to know before I buy what sort of length the programmes are.

My washing machine takes 2hr 24 for a standard wash. I have no idea why it takes so long!

Bonsoir · 25/02/2011 12:44

Modern machines use little water and wash gently for a long time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2011 12:45

ahh, thank you Bonsoir - that'll be why.

Bonsoir · 25/02/2011 12:47

European washing machines are much gentler on clothing than American ones, which wash more quickly with more water.

We are of course much more sophisticated about clothes care and grooming in Europe Smile

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 25/02/2011 12:50

Yes mine does the same as Bonsoir's - as does my dishwasher - it confuses the DS's a lot as both have the time left displayed in LED lights and they still can't properly work out why it either can jump from 40 minutes to 28 minutes in 3 minutes Grin

emsyj · 25/02/2011 12:51

You could get one with a quick wash cycle for when you need the load to finish quickly? Mine does an express wash in 32 mins at 40 degrees. It also has a 'short' function to reduce the time for a normal cycle.

Bonsoir · 25/02/2011 12:59

My washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher all have this function. I dream of an oven that can work out on its own when my food is cooked to perfection...

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 25/02/2011 13:07

oh that would be perfection in itself wouldn't it Bonsoir Grin

fairtradefloozy · 25/02/2011 13:10

We have 2hr 45 for standard wash at 40, or 45 mins for a "quick" was cycle at the same. Quickwash gets used quite a lot!

And irrespective of when you look at it, the display ALWAYS says that there is 1 min left on the spin cycle til it ends. You know, when you want to go out or go to bed, but just hang the washing up first. It does NOT only have one minute left. I hate that it lies to me and has made me complicit in its ways ...

Bonsoir · 25/02/2011 13:10

Technology has performed miracles in my lifetime. I live in hope Grin.

NetworkGuy · 25/02/2011 15:38

Thanks for the info - sadly out of touch on modern white goods and will need to get a new washing machine (if only for water/ energy saving) in the next couple of years, so all useful.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 25/02/2011 15:46

so do I Bonsoir, so do I - and if it could automatically switch the oven off and remove the food as well that would be awesome Grin

coraltoes · 25/02/2011 16:08

emsyj...do I sniff a fellow Miele owner?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 25/02/2011 16:20

coral - mine has almost the same as emsjy - except my quick wash is 38 minutes for a 40 degree wash, but has the "short" function - but most definitely not a Miele

emsyj · 25/02/2011 21:14

Yup, you got me! If Miele make it, I'll buy it ((sigh)). They should put me on the payroll the amount of time I spend extolling the virtues of their products!

I even accosted a stranger in John Lewis who was browsing the washing machines and umming and aahing with the assistant about whether to get a Miele or another brand and told her most earnestly that she MUST get a Miele. I think she was quite scared.

cumfy · 25/02/2011 21:19

Will depend on the inlet water temperature.

But interesting there is no good info.

cumfy · 25/02/2011 21:21

I always go out, so other than "less than 3 hours", I don't know. :o
