to think urine sample containers are the WRONG BLOODY SHAPE for women?!

I mean - weeing into a test tube? Is that really the best design anyone could come up with? Maybe it's okay for men, but it's very inconvenient for women. A sort of funnel shape would be better, no? Or am I just very cackhanded?

it was invented by a man, who had a penis and just didn't understand...

SecretNutellaFix · 25/02/2011 08:46

I pee into a plastic jug and then pour the required amount into the container?

Plastic jug is kept for household tasks only!

bupcakesandcunting · 25/02/2011 08:46

YANBU

And doing it when heavily pregnant is even more perilsome. I had brainwave one morning and pee'd into an old Kenco jar then dispensed it into the wee container.

I might send that into Chat! Top Tips. Get me a fiver, that will.

5DollarShake · 25/02/2011 08:47

YANBU. Messy affair.

ivykaty44 · 25/02/2011 08:47

erh the plastic jug isn't sterile - the idea is that you wee into the little bottle which isn't contaminated with cleaning products

SecretNutellaFix · 25/02/2011 08:48

Household tasks such as watering plants? It does get washed in boiling hot water after use, so no cleaning products on it.

ivykaty44 · 25/02/2011 08:49

with washing up liquid?

SecretNutellaFix · 25/02/2011 08:50

I rinse everything in very hot water after washing by hand.

GelflinGirl · 25/02/2011 08:50

YANBU them bloody things are so annoying!! Angry

Bogeyface · 25/02/2011 08:52

this really pisses me off! At my last antenatal I managed to pee all over my hand!

Just a comparison for you, when DH needed a sperm test he was given a nice wide pot to catch his contribution, which proved to me that the world is designed by men!

DuplicitousBitch · 25/02/2011 08:53

i can think of more pressing issues. it never bothered me. just wash up afterwards

Bumperlicious · 25/02/2011 08:56

Oh god yes, and when your bump is so big that you can't even see down there...

starfishmummy · 25/02/2011 08:57

I think a jug/bigger bottle is OK as long as it is well rinsed. I'm not sure that the little bottles are particularky sterile anyway. When I was pg I was given one and told to wash it out and reuse it for every ante natal appointment so after all that time it certainly was not sterile!

Bumperlicious · 25/02/2011 08:57

The plastic pots aren't sterile either. My midwives have always just given them a quick rinse and handed them back to me for reuse!

wolfhound · 25/02/2011 08:58

Yes, duplicitous, I'm not claiming that it is the first thing about this world that I would fix if I could, obviously there are one or two slightly more urgent issues... :) However this seems silly and so simple to change. Half way through 3rd pregnancy, I am so sick of faffing about with silly little tubes. Bogeyface - I have had the same issue. And have been embarrassed when passing MW a damp tube (when I've had to do the sample at the surgery). I imagine medical staff would rather not have an unsterile decanted sample / a splashed-on tube too...

OP posts:
wolfhound · 25/02/2011 09:00

Oh okay, starfish and bumper, looks like decanting is the way to go if sterility no issue. But don't really want to dedicate a household jug to weeing in. Would be much better to wee straight into the final container!

PlanetEarth · 25/02/2011 09:00

Totally agree! (Usually end up weeing on my hand Angry.)

tl10 · 25/02/2011 09:02

When I was 8 months preg I was sent to the waiting room loo in the hosp to go do one of these while I waited for my appointment. For once I managed to get it all in the pot and was dead chuffed but then stood up, somehow dropped it before I got the lid on and managed to get it all over the floor and my new sandles. Think everyone knew about it as I had already been waiting for 90 minutes and I remember shouting 'for fuck's sake'- how ladylike (blaming hormones lol). They are so badly designed and not meant for us at all hate them and getting wee on my hands ewwwww!!

DuplicitousBitch · 25/02/2011 09:02

buy yourselves a she-wee for such eventualities

tl10 · 25/02/2011 09:04

Do you really want a big she-wee in your handbag tho? lol ;) x

starfishmummy · 25/02/2011 09:05

Wolfhound I'm sure if you can wee into the final container it would be better but I always end up missing or weeing all over my hand!!

DerangedSibyl · 25/02/2011 09:05

This world is a mancentric place to be. Things are designed for men, and women have to adapt the best they can.

It renids me of the fox and the stork.

slightlymad72 · 25/02/2011 09:07

Oh I remember peeing in a pot when pg, fiddling around with the pot, searching for your knickers that you know you put on that morning but appear to have vanished under a mound of flesh, finally getting them down whilst still holding the pot in one hand the lid in the other, trying to get it between you and the toilet seat, searching aimlessly around trying to find in which direction your stream is flowing, your hand is covered, your legs are beginning to weaken because of the hover, you feel as though you are going to tip and smack your head on the cubicle door at any moment as gravity is slowing gaining its grip on your swollen tummy. Finally Yipee you found where the pee is coming from, it stops, you check the pot and hope that the 2mm you have managed to catch is enough for the dip stick test. If not its okay you'll be ready again in about 10mins cause baby has decided headbutting your bladder is a fun way to pass the time.

MaryPortasFan · 25/02/2011 09:09

The ones in the hospital on the antenatal and postanatal wards are wide- much more sensible- and made of cardboard. But they are huge, a bit offputting when you've just had your catheter removed and been told you have to pee a certain amount before you can go home!

GastonTheLadybird · 25/02/2011 09:11

Some hospitals (King's) do have funnels, I was given one a couple of times there when I needed to give a sample. Not every time though.

Made everything much much easier.
