It was a but substandard by Channel 4 standard . I had seen most of the newsreel before

It did confirm that royal parents were a bit thick in those days. Left handed boy had to write with other hand. And "shouting" was the parental cure for stammering.

We can do better than that. Progress/

Did the prog differe from the film? I suspect not too much. cheers "Gabby"

I don't think you can call people 'thick' just because parenting was different back then. Don't you think there will be things we accept as the norm now that will be laughable in 20 years time?

Mymblesson · 24/02/2011 11:05

Left handed boy had to write with other hand.

That didn't just happen to Royals, Kenny. It was common practice in schools until the 60s.

GabbyLoggon · 24/02/2011 11:10

Hammy O2 now you pose a very interesting question at the end. What wil;l we think in 20 years about parenting?

I hope the "Chinese Dragon mum" does not take over here. I heard an episode of her book on radio and the daughter wiped the floor with mummy.

well, if things are the same jobwise in 20 years, we will still be pressurising children towards non existant jobs. (almost a million young people unemployed...that needs to be a priority for HMG)

I can tell you one thing, I will not be bothered in 2031... I shall be at peace. cheers "Gabby"

Interesing article here from Christopher Hitchens - his usual style of course but makes some good points.

A recent BBC documentary made the comment that both Bertie and David were brought up by tutors and governors some of whom were "sadistic". Apparently George V stated that he was terrified of his father and was going to make sure his sons were also terrified of him.

Overall, the Royals have never been particularly academic (apart from Prince Albert) but to treat children in that way was downright cruel. Given Bertie's shy character it must have been an almighty trauma to suddenly find himself King. Apparently he wept on his Mum's shoulder when he got the news.

Although no Royalist I do feel sorry for the man.

slightlymad72 · 24/02/2011 11:11

Left handers being forced to write right handed continued up into the late seventies in some schools.

And stammering/stuttering is still misunderstood by a lot of people.

GabbyLoggon · 24/02/2011 11:15

Mymblesson....not at my school it wasnt. I saw no presure on left handed children earlier than 1960.

There were sensible Heads and daft Heads, I suppose. still will be , but not on lefthandedness.

Unless they do it a fee paying schools?

Why do you need to end every message with a sign off?

Cheers

GabbyLoggon · 24/02/2011 11:23

yes Johanna

Hitchens? we have a left-wing Hitchens and his brother is a vey Tory chappie. (who does not rate the present Tory-led government...and he does have some interesting things to say on policing.)

Yes, the royals of the time would be extreme on parenting by present standards.

Have they moved? who knows. Very little is said in public. ( though I think Mr Queen makes funny wisecracks.)

remember the BBC drama the lost prince I think George V's parenting skills were quite well demonstrated there.

GabbyLoggon · 24/02/2011 11:26

Moondog.

Habit moondog? We humans are creatures of habit to a large extent "Gabby" PS I like your joke.

DuelingFanjo · 24/02/2011 11:31

thoughh.. what is interesting about George v is that he wasn't supposed to be king either.

GabbyLoggon · 24/02/2011 11:41

Yes, hereditry is a funny old business. It gets juggled about with at times.

Will we end up with Harry instead of William then? Interesting thought.

well ,you cant guess the future. The Queen could make 100. (Charles may be sick of waiting and elope
to Scotland on the night train)

DF: That's true - Mary of Teck comes over here engaged to one Prince, he dies, so they pass her on to his successor! No wonder she always looked so grumpy!

I understand that HM is very good at mimicry - bet she does a mean Mrs T! Grin

MollieO · 24/02/2011 12:09

When I was at primary school in the early 70s the teacher used to hit my hand with a ruler if I held my pencil incorrectly so nothing new there.

GabbyLoggon · 24/02/2011 12:22

Mollie. I dont think that is going on in state schools now. Hitting fingers with rulers was common. As muck. (as they say in Yorkshire.) "Gabby"

I read a great Biog about Mary of Teck, her mum was quite a character.

RustyBear · 24/02/2011 20:08

Actually, out of all the monarchs since the Norman Conquest, only about a dozen have been succeeded by their eldest son....
