..working tax-free in a notorious dictatorship shouldn't expect the Foreign Office to rescue them if it all goes tits up?

I feel for them & their families - it must be terrifying but when you chose to work some where like Libya, you're chosing to put yourself in harm's way. That's one of the reasons the ex-pat jobs pay so well. It must be awful now but they should stop blaming the UK government - no one forced them to work out there.

Not sure what they expect a small group of unarmed British civil servants in Tripoli to do about the fact that they are stuck. And I wonder when they last paid any taxes to support those civil servants.

imagine the cheek of them daring to go out of their way to find work. who the hell do they think they are, why didnt they stay in lovely, prosperous, jobs -a -plenty uk?

eddiemccready · 23/02/2011 21:42

oh thats right I forgot this place is full of begrudgers

eons26 · 23/02/2011 22:16

What makes you think oil workers earn a fortune? I have a friend who's an oil worker. It's part of his job to spend a few months a year in some terrible places. He is not wealthy. He also gets made redundant regularly, spending a lot of time unemployed, due to the unstable nature of the market. YABVU in my view.

huddspur · 23/02/2011 22:19

How much they earn is irrelevant, the fact is they are citizens who are stuck in a country that could be on the brink of a very bloody civil war and the Government should do everything it can to get them out of there.

captainbarnacle · 23/02/2011 22:23

YABVU - how else are they going to get out? It's not like they can get on the next scheduled flight?

OH works 3000 miles away for 48 weeks a year. This enables me to be a SAHM for which I am grateful. But we live in a rented house etc here in UK.

No amount of money means you are expected to be left by the UK government. These people have no alternative but to get help from a national level, as in crises there are no other ways out.
