to be livid at the increase in car insurance premiums?

Sorry in advance, I need to rant!

My car insurance is due for renewal next month so I decided to go on the usual comparison websites for a quote. I was apalled to see that my premium has gone up by almost £350.

When I renewed in 2010 the increase was £100 and I just accepted it but how can you justify nearly £350 increase. Can I add that my circumstances haven't changed, only in that I didn't claim last year so have a further year's Protected No Claims and I cover less mileage as I no longer us the car to commute. I asked one broker to explain the massive increase and he said it was due to the amount of claims made when we had the snow last year. He also added that "no one living in a big city is going to see decent premiums this year, you'd have to live in the sticks to get it cheap now".
Not happy!!! Rant over !!

£350 increase? Christ, thats £100 more than my total annual car insurance.

We are quite annoyed it's happened just as my dh got past the male under 21 thing which meant his insurance has been nearly £3000 per year since he started driving. This year we managed to get it at just under £2000 but it seems that it's all going to go back up again :(

Huh £350 increase mine went up over £1000.Shock And that was with no change in circumstances. Ended up getting great deal from Tesco and clubcard points!! Grin

Feel that I should post here, as I work in insurance, and try to explain the increase. Car insurers have been loosing money for the last few years due to increasing costs of organised gangs of claimants, changes to the law and too much competition. Can't see premiums falling to be honest but more rises over the next couple of years.

Also the EU is going to announce next month whether insurers can use sex to segregate drivers (i.e. charge women less then men). If they say no then expect premiums for women to go up over night!

nancydrewfoundaclue · 23/02/2011 20:12

My insurance company wanted to increase my premium by £240 this year despite the fact that I have no claimed so my NCD went from 2 yrs to 3 yrs. No other change in circumstances.

I went on moneysupermarket and got quotes from at least 20 companies willing to do it cheaper.

littleducks · 23/02/2011 20:37

My and dhs joint policy insurance has gone up 300%

I did have a bump in a car park, which is some of it....but it is just crazy expensive now

Bakingboy ..."Also the EU is going to announce next month whether insurers can use sex to segregate drivers (i.e. charge women less then men). If they say no then expect premiums for women to go up over night!"

Why would they go up overnight, are women not currently charged as much for men at the moment. Or are you saying that women are more of a risk and therefore their premiums will go up?

Pardon my ignorance but I really don't know this?

Currently women are seen as being less risky (based on data collected) so their premiums are lower than men's. If the EU say that insurers can't sexually discriminate here (against men) then insurers will just raise everyone's prices to the men's level as they can't afford to bring men's prices down.
