Sorry to post in aibu, need advice.asap

Im on ml and received my wage slip and my wage has gone down to half. I thought it was next month, my own fault.

I have a standing order of £450.00 due to leave today, i cant phone bank to cancel as have no minutes on my mobile, its raining hard and raincover is with dh in car. Am i going to be charged by the bank? As my utilty dds would have come out first.? Is it worth me walking with dd 4months in the rain to the bank (30 min walk) to try and cancel now? Or wait till tomorow to cancel if i wont get charged anyway?
Really cannot afford a bank charge we are on the bones of our arse as it is.
Tia

If you replace the £450 leaving today by transferring online from another account they won't charge you.

foreverondiet · 23/02/2011 12:10

I would call bank, before you do anything. Priority to is get credit on phone - do you not have a landline? If you can't call then go there ASAP. If its leaving today probably already too late.

chocolatespiders · 23/02/2011 12:10

could you contact the bank online?

risingstar · 23/02/2011 12:10

if it is due to go out today, its too late to cancel it probably.

frgr · 23/02/2011 12:12

i would go out, no matter about the bad weather. i wouldn't risk getting into the charging spiral with your bank, i'd want to find out ASAP and see if something can be done. i think you should go sooner rather than later though, i'm sure there's a cutoff point where some transactions won't get you charged if it's put right before 3.30pm? Lloyds TSB i think? or maybe they all do that for all i know.

Summerbird73 · 23/02/2011 12:13

i would walk in the rain - do you have a rain cover for your pram? needs must and all that.

Imnotaslimjim · 23/02/2011 12:16

You really could do with calling them and letting them know the situation. My DH's bank were fab just before Christmas when his wages were late, they gave him an emergency overdraft to cover the outgoings so we didn't get charged and made sure that those already out didn't incur a charge either.

Is there a neighbour that could either let you use their phone or mind DC while you get to the bank?

EmmaBGoode · 23/02/2011 12:17

Ask someone on here if they wouldn't mind calling the bank for you. If you give them your telephone number, they can ask the bank to call you. I am sure they would, if the person explained.

FabbyChic · 23/02/2011 12:18

Generally they try to take direct debits at around 8am, they would already have tried to take it so you will be charged the bouncing fee.

Chil1234 · 23/02/2011 12:18

If you've got internet access to MN check your online account first. You seem a bit vague about whether your utility DDs have been deducted for a start so you might find that the SO hasn't been taken out today either. Get the facts before dashing off to any banks, perhaps?

beatrixkitto · 23/02/2011 12:30

Been knocking both neighbours doors, all out! Typical!
I have been trying to set up internet banking since january but still nothing arrives with santander.

Atm the rain is really heavy here, i might wait and see if it calms down.

I tried to cancel a standing order the day before it was due out once, it was to late they couldnt do it and yes i got charged £5, so it does not look good i am afraid, unless like a previous poster suggested to try for an emergency overdraft, again it could be to late, sorry its probably not what you want to hear

I do hope you manage to sort it, and that the bank is understanding

vj32 · 23/02/2011 13:48

I think I was with Santander before - too much hassle in the end. But if you kick up a fuss they may be able to waive a one off charge as a 'goodwill' gesture if you explain and have not had a problem previously on your account. So contact them ASAP and sound as tragic as possible would be my advice.

minibmw2010 · 23/02/2011 13:56

Phone them? If you are polite and explain the misunderstanding they may waive any charges this time (though that doesn't help if you don't have money for the standing order itself). I am with Santander and they will waive charges once or twice a year if its a genuine mistake.

QueenStromba · 23/02/2011 14:34

I've never banked with Santander but Nationwide will honour a standing order and not charge you as long as the money is in your account by 5pm on the day it is supposed to be paid. Try and check their terms and conditions online because the people I talked to on the phone didn't know this.
