old/new bathroom - wooden toilet seat

We are trying to plan a new bathroom as our current one is vile and we have lived with it for a number of years. We have had to save up pretty hard and so we really want to get it right and get a look that won't be outdated.
Just to give you the picture we live in a very old house (listed building)and our kitchen is a traditional wooden country cottage look.
So heres our problem:
DP wants a traditional bathroom complete with WOODEN TOILET SEAT (uuurrggghhh, that feels completely unhygenic to me - sorry don't mean to cause anyone else with one any offence)
I'd like a modern look 'hotel' style bathroom with travertine/stone tiles.
So AIBU to want a modern bathroom (inc modern toilet seat) in an old house?
What would you expect if you were looking to buy an old house (we may sell up in a few years)?

you need tongue/goove around the walls, roll top bath and big original sink and stripped floor-boards IMO. Shabby chic.

abenstille · 22/02/2011 23:07

oops - important

Wood is much nicer. And your intimate bits dont really touch the seat itself anyway..

We had one in my mums for over 40 years, and nobody ever caught anything off it.. lol!

GreenEyesandHam · 22/02/2011 23:11

Nothing to do with hygiene (I don't eat my dinner off it lol), I just don't like the look of wooden toilet seats.

And a warm toilet seat makes me go eeeuuuurkk :o

abenstille · 22/02/2011 23:12

StOla thats interesting you say that, as our next door neighbours (terraced house) have exactly that. Have to say though, that it looked cheap somehow. Our current bathroom probably cost more than that look when new - its just the grey suite, pink tiles and pink carpet (yes, carpet Blush)thats making it look not so new anymore Grin

Nothing dates faster than the current fashion. Though olde worlde needs care too. You don't mention the age of your house, but the high level cisterns are typically late victorian, edwardian period, so if your house is significantly older than that it would look out of place.

abenstille · 22/02/2011 23:13

Grin green warm toilet seats make me think someone must have just farted on it!!

Its also a myth that you can actually catch anything off a toilet seat.. so long as it is dry when you sit on it, you are absolutely fine.

KingofHighVis · 22/02/2011 23:15

abenstille of sat down for a shit

abenstille · 22/02/2011 23:16

The house was built in 1830's but it wasnt a house then but a mill. It was divided up into houses and its interior is more 1950's

I prefer a wooden seat as well and agree that the room you describe in OP sounds a bit cliched and, therefore, will date/is already dated. No idea what to suggest though

Hk13 · 22/02/2011 23:25

Managed to do it!! here hope it works after all that.
Took this just after the plumber had put it in so not finished off. Ignore the crappy cupboard doors - they are in skip somewhere now.
Had major ishoos with this bathroom as it's an awkward shape (under the stairs but surprisingly large) plus there was a DIY bodge job man living there before so we had to remedy all the awful and dangerous mistakes he made. If I could get my hands on him I would strangle him (or electrocute him with some of the live wires he left knocking about)

abenstille · 22/02/2011 23:36

Hk13 thanks so much, that sink looks great. Your old bathroom sounds like our current one. We have the bathroom light switch inside the bathroom and a homemade shower cubicle that looks like a steel tardis from dr who. OUrs is an awkward shape too, the walls are higher than the floor is long IYSWIM. Really wish we could do something useful with the height.

OP posts:
Hk13 · 22/02/2011 23:48

A mezzanine level? Wink
It's really awkward when you have a room like that. Big mirrors?
I have no idea.
Just don't get looking at too much bathroom porn-it will get you unneccesarily (sp?) excited and you'll only feel let down when you can't afford what you want Grin

abenstille · 22/02/2011 23:54

Oh Hk13 I know, I know. Have already been making noisesa bout having a small tv built into the wall at the end of the bath - a sort of wow focal point, DP thinks Im mad, apart from anything else we have lath and plaster walls - which are a NIGHTMARE!

Another one for wooden toilet seats here Grin

If your DP wants an authentic traditional toilet, shouldnt you put it outside?

Punkatheart · 23/02/2011 00:27

Give him a chamberpot under the bed - now that is authentically Georgian. Wink

mmsmum · 23/02/2011 00:32

So there I was typing away about how only a man could want to match his toilet seat with his kitchen and how I would love a modern new bathroom, when it hit me, I have a wooden toilet seat! Grin

Never really thought about it before tbh. I clean it the same as I would a plastic one, it probably is warmer now that I think about it and obviously it's never bothered me since I've never really noticed!

thumbwitch · 23/02/2011 01:45

oh I agree that actual warm (as in just-sat-on) loo seats are just nasty - but arctic plastic on the bum/legs when you're just out of bed is horrible too!
And you don't stick to wooden seats like you would to plastic ones if you have to be in there for any length of time...

BonzoDooDah · 23/02/2011 10:07
Grin

TV in the bathroom? [bonkers] There's no way you could get that past the electrical testing stuff. Unless it was specifically designed to be used under water.
Bathroom = steam = wet surfaces = nicely fried in the bath Grin

I can't stand the style for 'hotel' bathrooms, and one would put me off buying. The main selling point for me when we bought our current house is my gorgeous bathroom. Dark-stained wood floor, classic claw-foot bath, pedestal sink and high level cistern. If I can only persuade my mother to give me the chaise longue it will be perfect.

The family bathroom has a marble floor, though. I'm planning on ripping it up and painting the floorboards white.

mummytime · 23/02/2011 10:46

If everything else was country cottage I would expect a countryish feel, so wood (and a nice hygienic modern wooden toilet seat.
If it is a loft apartment then I would expect a very modern hotel type bathroom.

But a gren high up cistern, or a decorated toilet bowl sounds OTT. I would stick to white (after all I don't think anyone is going to not buy the house because of the toilet seat, they are cheap and easy to change).
