What does lol actually stand for?

When I text friends I often get replies starting with lol? What the hell does it mean? I used to think it meant lots of love then I thought it meant laugh out loud but that doesn't really seem to make sense either. Sorry prob not right place to ask this question really but can someone just clear this up for me please???

Laugh Out Loud, but some people use it for Lots of Love.

And some people just seem to use it randomly.

Not on MN though! We Grin instead.

horsemadgal · 22/02/2011 00:25

It is laugh out loud.

ShowOfHands · 22/02/2011 00:26

It's French for 'I'm a twat'.

madhattershouse · 22/02/2011 00:27

Grin at SOH

reelingintheyears · 22/02/2011 00:27

Lick one's Labia.

FabbyChic · 22/02/2011 00:28

Its laugh out loud, and I hate it with a passion. It is so childish.

terrystyg · 22/02/2011 00:29

Good to know I'm so hilarious then.
Thanks.

I've never used text speak and these forums are full of these sort of things. It takes me ages to de-cypher a text from my step-d..she can't see why! Guess it's a usage sort of thing.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 22/02/2011 08:05

Me too Fabby. LOL is super annoying, how many people really do LOL when they read something. I have a well developed sense of humour, but seldom LOL unless DD has fallen over spectacularly.
IMO, it is Burmese for I'm a thick twat.

cyb · 22/02/2011 08:07

lol lots of people use it as a full stop or comma lol so it seems they are laughing like hyenas lol

I prefer a hearty ROAR myself

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 22/02/2011 08:52

ROFL

ElectricSoftParade · 22/02/2011 10:10

PMSL Smile

portaloo · 22/02/2011 10:18

LMFAO Grin

usualsuspect · 22/02/2011 10:22

Its used to show you are joking ..much like the Grin or Wink used on MN

I don't have a problem with it

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 22/02/2011 11:34

I agree usualsuspect I prefer it to what my mum does: She puts a great big HA! after her "jokes". I think it just makes her sound deranged.

Loulovesshopping · 22/02/2011 12:08

i actually LOL-ed at this thread! :D thanks for making my day everyone

Duna · 22/02/2011 12:44

It makes my teeth itch. Awful, just awful.

IlsaLund · 22/02/2011 13:11

My lovely elderly aunt has just discovered texting - I was a bit disconcerted to get a text saying 'sorry to hear your cat died. LOL'

I'm presuming she meant 'lots of love' and wasn't laughing at my grief
