Sory for posting here. I wanted to be in with the best chance of someone being able to answer my question.

I have made a cake (on my profile). The inside is rich fruit cake. How much should I charge? I have no idea how much it cost to make, and it took about 18/20 hours labour (I am a novice).

I was asked to make it, by the way. Didn't agree on price beforehand. They are willing to pay the going rate, whatever it is.

looks fab was quoted a light sponge with basic, white and a few pink detailed icing for dds bday, that was £135 quid, I didnt bother as tought it was alot but did some research from a few suppliers local shops so no websites and ranges were £95 10 £200 so I recon you could ask for £140+ for this little master piece.

tomhardyismydh · 20/02/2011 21:30

not sure where that 10 cropped up from should have been "to"

IcingOnTheCake · 20/02/2011 21:30

I would think around 40 pounds. I know you said it took around 18-20 hours but as a professional, it wouldn't take me that long.
If I were you I would just charge cost so you will have to work that out.

Bookswapper · 20/02/2011 21:32

I have been looking at cakes and would not expect change from £75 for this.

Its lovely btw

MOSP · 20/02/2011 21:32

What different answers!! Well, the time it took includes the planning and special shopping trips etc.

Thanks for your opinions.

Tom they were ripping you off. Glad you didn't bother.
I assume it isn't your job doing cakes? Before I did cakes as a job, I used to just charge family and friends cost and purhaps a little bit on top. I didn't charge for my time.

Trebuchet · 20/02/2011 21:42

I do cakes, got small business from home, I would charge £60 for fruit cake this size, £35 ish for sponge

Trebuchet · 20/02/2011 21:42

But then I find it really hard to charge much I'm a crap businesswoman

tomhardyismydh · 20/02/2011 21:43

no I didnt bother but did look at others localy and they seemed very similar in price, as stated previously.

mumbar · 20/02/2011 21:43

My uncle was a pastry chef, he made all the families cakes for weddings, special birthdays, christenings etc. He would charge cost and a fruit cake like that would be £20-30, but usually with less decorative detail - in icing quantity iyswim?

IcingOnTheCake · 20/02/2011 21:47

Tom are you talking london prices? I am always shocked at how some can charge over a hundred pounds for a single sponge with minimum decoration.

Imnotaslimjim · 20/02/2011 21:47

I'm a hobbyist baker and would charge about £60 for something like that

Its lovely by the way, well done!

tomhardyismydh · 20/02/2011 21:58

southeast prices, so mostly comapring to london possibly.

Whatnamechange · 20/02/2011 22:08

For a minute I thought thebird was meant to be a decoration, feel stupid.

MogadoredMemoo · 20/02/2011 23:42
