To coin a word "decorexic" to mean someone who is very keen on interior design is pretty offensive?

Sunday Times style magazine, can't link to it as you have to pay now.

Woman trilling on about how she never used to be interested in decorating her house and . . . er . . . now she is . . . er . . . and that's it - for 2500 words.

Title of article - "Help! I'm DECOREXIC"

She amusingly relates how her "as yet undecorexic sister-in-law" has mocked her Alternative Flooring grey stair runner.

I mean What the Fucking FUCK?

I don't find it offensive. I don't know what it means though, so it's a rubbish made-up word.

"Tanorexic" is also common now. Appeared a few years ago and has kind of paved the way for other new, less obvious-sounding coinages. That is how these things tend to evolve.

Language doesn't always make sense or hold to moral guidelines - slang often offends because it evolves in cheeky, inappropriate ways. There's not much point trying to stem the tide tbh as it has always been like this.

But having said that, I get why you hate this. If it's any consolation, as someone who used to work in the dictionary trade and discuss new words a lot, I think "decorexic" is pretty crap and highly unlikely to catch on.

PS: not least because nobody gives a toss about how much other people like to decorate their houses - I mean honestly, what a pile of toss that article sounds.

What does tanorexic mean?

YakovsNubianBlingExplosion · 20/02/2011 18:44

Addicted to tanning, pointy. Used in a range of contexts from gossip-rag 'joke' tone to semi-serious discussions of people with addictions to sunbeds, which apparently does happen.

Irritating word but definitely out there being used. Though probably less so than a couple of years ago.

Tanorexic ??? !!! ???

< faints >

If I'd have known that one I'd have ranted and raved and had my butt kicked about that one too . . .
