Is Beyonce betraying her roots/heritage by having blonde hair etc?

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown has written an interesting article about Beyonce and the 'impact' her 'look' has on impressionable youngsters.

I am not white myself and would be interested to see what people think about Beyonce's look... is she trying to look more 'European'? Is Yasmin right when she says that:

black celebrities appear to deny their heritage by trying to make themselves look white, I despair for the youngsters who see those images

and she also says:

The answer is that every woman of colour has an important social and cultural history that cannot simply be bleached away or denied by the use of hair straighteners. That?s why I passionately believe that Beyonce?s ignorance of how this betrays her heritage is so insidiously damaging to all peoples of colour

I do think that people should always wear and be however they want to be, but I can't help but feel that Yasmin has made some good points here, especially about young women of colour having strong role models of colour - I embrace my skin colour and would never dye my dark hair blonde because that is my taste, but is there more to Beyonce's new look? Is she betraying her heritage?

She's not denying her race she's getting a reverse tan.

Millions of Lobster wannabe's go abroad every year to get a tan,I'm one of them.

It doesn't mean I want to be black though.

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 14:27

I have no issue with her dyeing her hair blonde, but I have an issue with her bleaching her skin.

Rhinestone · 18/02/2011 14:28

How about everyone minds their own business about how someone else chooses to have their hair?

HowBleddyRude · 18/02/2011 14:28

I think she just wants to have blonde hair

Doesn't mean she's betraying her heritage any more than a red-headed Irish girl going blonde would be.

I'm a bottle blonde atm, just got bored of being a brunette.

manicbmc · 18/02/2011 14:28

I think people should be left to look how they want to, no matter what their colour/cultural background.

By that reasoning I should be wearing a lot of black, an apron and a headscarf.

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 14:29

lobster wannabe! lol! I can never quite understand the need of some people to BURN and go so red in the sun - I don't burn but am careful in the sun yet I have friends who do little to take care! I tell them that if they just put on some sensible sun factor 20/25 they would get a nice colour but they never listen!

Well I have dyed my hair many different colours and had many tans, it doesn't mean I an betraying my 'english rose' background.

Everyone wants what they haven't got, straight/curly hair, blonde/black hair or even pale/tanned skin. She isn't betraying her heritage she is experimenting with as many different looks as she can.

Having a hairstyle should not be a racial issue. If it is you have too much time on your hands

Sarsaparilllla · 18/02/2011 14:31

I don't think she's betraying her heritage any more than someone getting a spray tan to look darker, or a perm to make their naturally straight hair curly

And it's from the Daily Mail anyway, so I can't be bothered to read it all :o

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 14:31

do you think she bleaches starlight? I spoke to my friend about the hair thing and she said she worries that her daughter will hate her hair and want hair like Beyonce (she is black by the way)

I agree that women should dress how they want but there were some interesting points made in the article

curlymama · 18/02/2011 14:31

She is not denying her heritage at all, she is just dying her hair. Most women do that at some point in their lives don't they?

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 14:32

well debs you must have too much time on your hands too seeing as you are reading and replying to this thread

if it is not of interest you can always go find other more interesting things to do

MissyKLo- I think she bleaches, bigtime. Just google a pic of her in the early Destiny's Child days, she's a a good couple of shades lighter than she was then.

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 14:33

manic - why should you be wearing black and apron and headscarf?????????????

What about orange people? They seem to get left out in all this. There are many orange girls at my dd's school. I feel so sorry for them being the colour of a tangerine. Grin

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 14:34

The writer of the article Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is making a simple everyday thing into a racial issue.

Who does she think she is?

So much for multi-culturism ehhh?

HowBleddyRude · 18/02/2011 14:38

My boys (mixed race) go quite pale during the winter and look very dark in the summer. It's called being exposed to the sun.

Beyonce does indeed look pale compared to earlier photos but perhaps she is just protecting her skin against the sun instead of allowing it to tan?

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 14:38

but for some women it is a racial issue, she has raised some interesting points?

OP posts:
manicbmc · 18/02/2011 14:38

I am working on the moustache Wink

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 14:39

oh and Yasmin is a woman of colour who feels she has something to say on this, which is fair enough!
