To want to be able to get my child's haircut on the weekend?

I am not sure if this is just about my neighbourhood, but it is impossible to get an appointment for a child to get a haircut, eye test, etc. on the weekend. The reason given is that these days are reserved for adults or as it was put several times to me 'for working people'. Are they assuming all people who have children don't work? Is it unreasonable to think that parents should be able to do these things with their children on a weekend?

Never had a problem - I work in the week and cannot expect cm to get dd's hair cut. Can't believe this is an issue - must be a regional thing.

But Mrs Northam, it doesn't take 1 hour to cut my son's hair, more like 10 minutes!

Eleanorosie I am a hairdresser and many kids haircuts take as long as a mans hair cut ,due to not sitting still and often having to spend t least five mins brushing out knots and tangles from hair . I had to cut a bob on a three year old girl who kept tilting her head to the side. Trying to do it straight under these circumstances takes longer than an adult cut.also!how do I pay my staff if we were to do a free kids cut with every adult?

Pony princess. We have 30 min and 45 min time slots so a child would go in a 30 min slot. We do not know how long it will take to do a kids haircut so we can't assume it will take 10 mins.barbers are a good bet if you want a 10 minute haircut without an appointment .

I cut all my dcs' hair myself until they were about 10. Then dh took the boys to the barber's on saturday morning when he got his own cut - we used to get a bargain rate for all 3!

DD just grew her hair long and had plaits!

A decent pair of clippers cost about £25. Very good investment IMO.

I have no problem gettingbhair appointments for 8y dd at weekends.

Re eye tests. We found it far harder to get them during term time school hours for dd. She has some extra holidays than other schools locally but most of the opticians wouldn't accept her in these hours.

Seriously?! Shock

Have you got a posh accent? I would phone up pretending to be your own PA and make appointments that way

Don't go to a hairdressers. If it's for your son, just go to an old fashioned barbers, no need to make an appointment and much cheaper.

EleanorJosie · 01/03/2011 17:51

I wasn't suggesting you do that all the time scattermummy, but it would be a good promo for a short time to get more adult customers in.

ponyprincess · 02/03/2011 14:05

Scattermummy, you have a good point that as a hairdresser you can't know ahead of time how quick it might be or how cooperative a child might be. My problem was just with the blanket 'no, not on weekends'. I just was not expecting it and put off by the explanation that working people needed the slots.

Now however, I can be armed with my clippers and my Rapunzel-like daughter and not be bothered with it!
