to name and shame companies who do not know that the Scottish Highlands are part of mainland UK - HERE?

Well here goes. The company I would like to choose first is one of Mumsnet's partners, so I'd better not just now.

So instead my first name and shame goes to Wincanton Home Delivery, as used by Argos and Homebase (and Comet, anyone?) whose staff have yet to learn that the delivery date they quote is NOT the delivery date we get. It is merely the delivery date to a local contractor who may take another week to deliver to our home.

Wincanton Home Delivery, as used by Argos and Homebase - train your staff properly and stop promising a service you do not deliver.

Sorry if it's not what you ment but that's how I took it after you put a sceptical face after saying "does that make sense"

idonotliveonanisland · 18/02/2011 17:25

Wow, just back from work. I forgot to bump this thread this morning - I see it wasn't needed!

There are a few stubbornly ignorant individuals on this thread, but I'm pleased to see the majority of sensible posts. But please, more naming and shaming!

I quoted this one yesterday from one of Mumsnet's partners. I am not naming the company in case someone scanning the thread thinks I am shaming. I am NOT. This is FAIR (but I wonder what the Londoners' opinions are of this?):

"Please call xxxx for separate quotes on deliveries to Cornwall, N. Wales, Scotland, Highlands & Islands, N. Ireland, Eire and the Continent, which will be charged at cost.
** For deliveries to Central London, we reserve the right to charge on the Congestion Charge (if applicable) and any parking fees. If your child's bedroom is up several floors, it may take us a little longer to install it."

Noooo I put a sceptical face because I wasn't sure I was explaining very clearly! It wasn't directed at you honestly!

idonotliveonanisland · 18/02/2011 17:27

And as for those who cannot understand the concept of sharing the delivery costs between ALL customers, do you work for JojoMamanBebe?

Someone mentioned the privatisation of Royal Mail. I agree, the thought makes me shudder. I reckon we'd be lucky to get any post at all.

Funny how those who are taking issue with our debate are from London. The North/South divide at its best Hmm.

But to those Londoners, why can we send things to you for the cheaper price? Wby doesn't market pricing work both ways?

Milngavie · 18/02/2011 17:32

why

Milngavie · 18/02/2011 17:33

Oooh Gentle Otter, look an English county is mentioned.

I hope you're all prepared for the resounding silence to come from said Londoners. I do realise the source of the confusion though. The Watford Gap does sound like it should be filled with water...

Milngavie · 18/02/2011 17:44

Isn't if funny thought that they only comment on a thread asking for naming and shaming? Only one non-Scot came on the other thread.

We'll be moaning Scots next, and reminded that we choose to live here and not in London Grin.

Milngavie · 18/02/2011 17:44

it not if. Why can't I type anymore?

SharonGless · 18/02/2011 17:48

My parents live in an IV postcode just on A96 which is main arterial route. Due to the costs they have stuff delivered to grandparents address with AB postcode which these companies accept but in fact is in a remote location and very difficult to get to! Ridiculous

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2011 17:49

I think having it in this particular topic will attract people with opposing views - AIBU tends to have that effect.

I agree about Royal Mail, they do a fantastic job, if privatisation is considered by the government here should be huge protests on the scale of those against the forest sell off - living where we do I have a lot of respect for the Postie!

idonotliveonanisland · 18/02/2011 17:53

I didn't know where to put tbh. There are remarkably few opposing views all things considered, and I'm hoping that non Scots are reading this and thinking "OMG".

So do I idonotlive. Smile

expatinscotland · 18/02/2011 18:01

'Um, how can it be wrong to charge extra if it costs the supplier more to provide the service? '

Because it's not applied equally to equally remote parts of Wales and England.

Because companies are posting policies saying 'Free UK mainland deliveries' and not considering most of an entire country in the UK as mainland.

Last I checked, I pay the same taxes as every other working person in the UK. So does everyone here.

And yes, Milgavnie, why are we paying more at the pump for our own fucking resource?!

What a bloody con!

Grandhighpoohba · 18/02/2011 18:02

Ikea do deliver in Scotland, they just don't want you to know about it!

I bought a sofa in the Edinburgh store which has to be made to order. 6 weeks later, they delivered my sofa to Perth, for free. I then tried to order my second sofa online to avoid a trip to Edinburgh, but no, apparently they don't deliver. Bollocks! So I have to go to the store to place an order on their computer, at which point they will miraculously discover their courier!

SharonGless · 18/02/2011 18:04

Oooh Grandhighpoohba thought IKEA wouldn't deliver at all. That is useful to know

Same here - I bought some doors instore from Ikea, Edinburgh and they delivered them to me.

missjulie · 18/02/2011 18:09

We had a delivery from Ikea (due to a broken bit of furniture being replaced) and they charged us £60 delivery!!!!!

backwardpossom · 18/02/2011 18:27

Haha yes, I have the same situation. Parents in Elgin (IV30), and we're near Buckie (AB56) - we're a lot more difficult to get to than my parents yet we're often not charged for postage where they would be. It's a nonsense.

notpythagoras · 18/02/2011 18:28

Milngavie: you chose to live in Scotland Grin

Seriously, it SHOULD apply the other way - it SHOULD cost you to send stuff to London from Scotland. The only reason it might not is that we Londoners indirectly subsidise the Royal Mail (by paying artificially high postage within London so that people in Scotland, or wherever, can have below cost post). This governmental price regulation made sense when everyone was reliant on the post to conduct business but is redundant now - the modern equivalent (which is happening, I think) is subsidising broadband for remote areas. For postage, everyone should pay the actual cost.

It's absolutely your right to boycott companies that charge you higher delivery but don't make it out as a MORAL argument and expect others to feel sorry for you when it is purely an economic reality.

False advertising is another thing and should def be stamped on - delivery charges should be made clear up front.

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2011 18:50

Notpythagoras I don't feel I am claiming any moral high ground, do you think it should be the same for fuel, oil should be cheaper in Scotland because we have oil? It subsidises the UK government a fair bit, but fuel prices are highest here, electricity should be cheaper here too, especially from wind farms and hydroelectricity. We should pay less for lamb too considering all the sheep farming that goes on here...
