are you Mary Portas?

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 16:12

I think a look up is nice

Do you say Goodbye, or Thanks when you leave a shop (especially a small shop which only has you and the assistant in it)? I do, but I am wondering if I am old-fashioned throw-back ....

KazBarTheFriendlyGhost · 17/02/2011 16:13

depends on the shop?

Ragwort · 17/02/2011 16:14

JamieLeeCurtis - yes, I always say 'Goodbye' or 'Thank you' when I leave a small shop - I think I am very old-fashioned though - older people usually acknowledge me but teenagers grunt Grin.

I have worked in retail for many years and my pet hate is being ignored by sales assistants.

FluffyMummy123 · 17/02/2011 16:14

god i always have a lOl with an assitant
i even have a nice day them

These days I'm pitifully glad if they say hello to me at the till, rather than smacking gum and discussing last night's events with Samantha on the next till.

M&S has upped it's game in this respect recently

pinkstinks · 17/02/2011 16:15

there needs to be a balance though, I was in specsavers the other day and three different members of staff came up to me to see if they could help me, i got less and less polite...Blush
i generally say thankyou when I leave a shop esp if someone is on front of store cover and im 22. Its just manners surely....

iPhoneDrone · 17/02/2011 16:16

YANB

this is usually the case in tossy wooden toy shops or cupcake and bunting establishments

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 16:16

Ragwort - do you say thankyou as you get off the bus, too ?

iCod - me too. I am turning into my mother. I flirt with young men, and actually want help in choosing jeans from the girls in Gap

iPhoneDrone · 17/02/2011 16:17

GAP people are lovely

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 16:19

yes they are iPhone. A young man I was flirting with talking to recently was so flattering about a jacket I was trying on, that I believed him and bought it

iPhoneDrone · 17/02/2011 16:20

did he compliment you on your own clothes

they always do that in our one

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 16:21

Yes! Oh dear, I've been done with sales patter. Still, it was convincing sales patter, and he was right, so that's OK Grin

nufsed · 17/02/2011 16:28

I usually call good morning/afternoon/hello when people come in, unless I have a queue in front of me in which case I try to make eye contact and nod or smile. We are a small local shop.

We have sometimes had 'projects' - customers who come in daily and don't respond at all. Usually they turn out to be shy, quiet people who come out of their shell eventually and then want to chat all day. But there are some who just want to get what they want and go without saying thankyou.

LadyOfTheManor · 17/02/2011 16:55

I hate it when they attempt to talk to me. I'm not there to make conversation I just like to go in buy whatever I need and leave without being mythered. If I want help surely I'd just go and find someone to help me?

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 17:02

Oh no, I agree I don't want them to necessarily initiate the talking. Just respond to me. I hate being hassled or followed

John Lewis is good - when you ask for something they take you to it rather than vaguely pointing or not knowing

AmazingBouncingFerret · 17/02/2011 17:06

I always greet people enthusiastically especially this time of the year when there's hardly any customers and im glad to actually see someone. I get some quite worried looks if im very bored.

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 17:20

I'd talk to you ABF. Shop work is soooo slooooow if it's quiet
