I'd rather have basic tasty food and lots of fun, good company and relaxing genial company than a formal expensive do with less people.

The sense of welcome and warmth is the most important thing.

I went to a wedding once where they served bacon rolls in the evening, and there was a cheese table out at the same time.

It was yummy, went down very well. And definately nicer than a finger buffet where you end up with trays towards the end of the evening left with a couple of sandwiches and sausage rolls looking manky.

I'd say a finger buffet.

We had a buffet as our main wedding breakfast - got married later in the day so it was 'tea' rather than 'lunch'. Twas the only way we could afford it anyway. No one complained!

(and it was veggie as well, got a few mutters beforehand but afterwards a fair few meat-eaters came up to us saying they were impressed and hadn't realised how good a meat-free meal could be)

I'm confused. Are you having two meals ie a main meal (the wedding breakfast) and then this for the evening reception or is this the only meal for the day?

BertieBasset · 17/02/2011 14:25

We had a hog roast with crusty rolls, salad, apple sauce, garlic bread and jacket potatoes for our evening buffet. I have never seen food go so quick! It was pretty formal in the day too, but it seemed to go down well.

Have what you and dp would like, and can afford.

We had a proper sit down meal and then in the evening bacon rolls / sausage sandwich and cones of chips - was a fairly boozy affair and it went down extremely well.

Also went to a wedding where the main meal was a hog roast and that was also great - imo way better than a fngetr buffet!

Finger buffet can end up looking very greasy and tired as the evening wears on. Recently went to a wedding where there were absolutely scores of freshly made sandwiches, chips, sausage rolls, the usual deep fried stuff. I'd say about 80% of it was untouched and removed by the staff before the evening ended. Seemed like a huge waste of effort on the part of whoever had made all the sandwiches. The majority of the guests had been there all day and so had a 3 course meal in the late afternoon; those who came for the evening at 8pm had mostly already eaten (as, along with no dress code, it didn't mention whether there was a buffet on the evening invitation) and TBH it was a waste of money to have that much food as I think they catered for absolutely everyone to have at least a round and a half of sandwiches...

Hog roast definitely a great idea. Veggie buffet with nice salads, quiches, antipasti etc and that could do everyone all day as it keeps nicely as cold cuts in the evening.

A hot buffet is always nice. Garlic bread, wedges, hot sandwiches etc would be lovely. I hate hog roasts though. Was really disappointed when sil had a hog for her wedding, although i realise i am probably the only one not to like them.

why not have a hog roast and someone can cut it up and you can have pig in a sandwich plus salad.
