For pleasure, an ACTUAL BOOK and not the fixture list for his chosen football team on line, and said book was a PROPER novel? He's ten, and I have NEVER until this point known him to read except under duress in the past.

Excellent news - yanbu - reading is crucial! However so is sleep...if this enthusiasm continues you should try to set a 'put the book down now' time!

Marlinspike · 16/02/2011 23:26

Great news Cat!

Have a Wine to celebrate!

My DD (14) "can't see the point" of reading, but is planning to do English at A level??

squeakytoy · 16/02/2011 23:26

I used to read till all hours of the night... and still do. I love seeing kids getting really engrossed in a book.

Catnao · 16/02/2011 23:27

I hope it will continue, but never imagined I could be seriously contemplating a "put book down now" approach! Up until now, in year six, it has been a "pick book up or else"/bribery sort of situation!

Totally agree - let him read to his heart's content.

AuntiePickleBottom · 16/02/2011 23:27

awww i love seeing kids reading, it coming up to 1/2 term so many kids are tired in school by now anyway

EightiesChick · 16/02/2011 23:30

Fantastic! One late night will do no harm and it shows you value reading for pleasure.

Catnao · 16/02/2011 23:32

And the book wasn't even about football! (Must check that have brought correct child home from training tonight!)

candleshoe · 16/02/2011 23:32

Quite agree - but don't kill it with too much enthusiasm!!

Like my dad and rugby...first time my poor bro. showed any kind of interest dad went right overboard....signed him up to coaching, got tickets to matches, bought him kit and a ball.

KILLED IT DEAD!

Catnao · 16/02/2011 23:34

Poor candleshoe's brother! I will admit it had crossed my mind to buy all books by the same author...

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 16/02/2011 23:36

depends what the book is?

candleshoe · 16/02/2011 23:37

Perhaps a special trip to buy one more by same author ... or choose one on Amazon?

Catnao · 16/02/2011 23:40

The book is...hang on, I'll jkust go and reclaim it from son's bedroom....OK

"The Recruit" by Robert Muchamore.

Never heard of book or author and I am a primary school teacher! Bought it cos it was £1 at Waterstones if I bought however many other kids' books I bought that weekend for my class at school.

Reading the back, it appears to be about terrorists and the secret service, but it did come from the 9-12 age range selection!!

I am a primary school teacher too and I've never heard of it either ... ooops Blush

Catnao · 16/02/2011 23:54

Well - it seems to have done the trick, for the moment at least, and on the inside front cover there are ten books from the same series! Grin Hopefully they will all be on the "costs a pound when you spend x amount" stand!
