to think non-curriculum week - why?

DN is in y8, this is the second non-curriculum week they've had. Apparently all they do for a week is watch films and there's no homework. THere's no homework anyway - the deputy head said they should get homework and he's aware it's a problem but it's difficult to make the teachers set it - you wonder where the Ofsted outstanding comes from).

If they were being taught off-curiculum week for a few lessons, I would be all for it but he has just got back saying their teacher let them 'Come Fly With Me', yes, the weak Walliams/Lucas vehicle (which he was impressed had swear words in it) - so not even remotely representative of our comedy heritage.

Such rubbish Angry

so what's the educational benefit to them supposed to be then?

tbh, I'd be saying "Look, if you aren't going to actually TEACH my child, then they're not coming in and we'll go away instead. May as well benefit from a cheaper holiday."

That's what DP just said.

And it's not as if they tell us - we only know from what DN has said, although I did drop it in to an email to the deputy head - to confirm he wasn't getting any homework and apparently it's all true.

He missed the last 3 months of Y7 before he came to us so he's already behind.

Hecate, that crossed my mind. A week in France sounds lots more educational!

Off curriculum days or weeks are normally to cover the requirements to teach things like citizenship and PSHE which usually aren't considered important enough to get a proper lesson on the timetable but for which a certain amount of teaching is required.

They can also allow trips to be organised without massive costs to the school because the timetable can be altered.

I would want to know the educational purpose of the week. Is there a theme or topic?
If he is watching films I would want to know why.
If he is watching Come Fly With Me I would be making a complaint to the school that he is being forced to watch such rubbish.

An entire week? For the second time?

Odd. I'd be writing a letter and asking for justification for this.
