Pant, jean and piece

Goddess knows I'm not into style or fashion at all. But there's soemthing especially cringe-worthy when people refer to pants or jeans in the singular. I wince even thinking about it.

Also anyone who talks about an item of clothing (or indded a work of art) as a 'piece' is surely irretrievably lost to pretentiousness?

When I was at school, 'piece' was a nickname for penis!

I hate stupid fashion magazine words for clothes. Zchooch(sp?) it up? What the fuck does that even mean?!

Salmotrutta · 16/02/2011 10:56

So which is worse??:

"This is a nice pant Madam" OR

"These are nice slacks"

Because both are crimes in my book - pant/tight/jean is just awful but whenever I hear the word slacks I cringe.

noddyholder · 16/02/2011 10:59

I did that on here once due to bad typing and not poncery and I was immediately pulled up! I ahve a friend who does it all the time though She once said I like a brown boot!

52Girls · 16/02/2011 11:05

Blimey, the last time I heard the word 'slacks' mentioned it was by my Nan, circa 1982- they were fawn. She used to sew in a crease down the front.

noddyholder · 16/02/2011 11:12

My mum loves to call things fawn!

Salmotrutta · 16/02/2011 11:14

52Girls - but that's the thing, there are enough older folks around who do still say "slacks". It's just plain wrong!

Your Nan sewed a crease down the front of her slacks? - LOL. Sorry but I now have an image of Grannys up and down the land sewing creases in slacks. No offence!

Salmotrutta · 16/02/2011 11:15

Fawn - LOL. My Mum too!!

Salmotrutta · 16/02/2011 11:16

Actually fawn is better tha beige

BeribbonedGibbon · 16/02/2011 11:17

I do love a nice jean and you can't go wrong with a versatile black pant. [deadpan]

GrimmaTheNome · 16/02/2011 11:23

What, the jean on one leg and the pant on t'other?

GrimmaTheNome · 16/02/2011 11:27

Come to think, I really don't like 'pant' applied to outerwear even in the plural. Probably after realising from the look on DHs face exactly what mental image was conjoured up by someone referring to her 'leather pants'. Grin

Even worse with Americans wearing a vest on the top half.

Surely all slacks are fawn - it's the law. And drip dry crimplene.

My pet hate is poncey property porn shows where the houses don't have rooms, they have 'amazing spaces' in which to put their 'statement pieces'. i.e. uncomfy hard chrome and leather chairs.

Salmotrutta · 16/02/2011 11:45

Drip dry - I remember my Mum buying a few pieces when drip-dry fabrics first appeared (god that makes me sound old!).
They washed like a rag - very handy!

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 16/02/2011 11:48

very Tim from Project Runway. Makes me wince and feel all funny too - like Math Confused
