i did this today, and she said i can't bend down to pick it up.

imo, if you can clean up after a dog you really shouldn't have one.

I currently walk a small dog for an elderly woman through cinammon trust. She gets her dog to sit on top of a pouffe and then puts his lead on. It is perfectly possible to do most things with a well behaved dog without bending down to the floor, by getting them to jump up on something.

PersonalClown · 14/02/2011 23:15

Ok. I admit I was a little OTT there about being able to bend down. I guess I'm projecting my own bad temper about having to deal with the pain.

She could have asked someone to help her pick it up? It's not the nicest job but better than leaving dog crap to be trodden in.

ledkr · 14/02/2011 23:17

you should have offerred to pick it up for her.......and then shoved it in her handbag Grin

A1980 · 14/02/2011 23:20

YANBU I hate how old people think they are expemt from rules simply becasue they're old but they're very quick to judge and complain about the younger generation.

NinjaCuckoo · 14/02/2011 23:21

lesley33 good points :-) my Dad is waiting to have his hip replaced and it's a nightmare for him even trying to get his socks on

however

YANBU if she was lying through her teeth

The road leading to the local primary school used to be known as Dogshit Alley, Disgusting

ledkr · 14/02/2011 23:22

poor poof

NinjaCuckoo · 14/02/2011 23:34

Did you just call my Dad a poof?

whethergirl · 14/02/2011 23:35

YANBU. Let's presume she's not lying. She CAN NOT take her dog out walking every day letting it shit where ever it wants for other people to walk into, toddlers to fall on to, and for others to have to smell and see it as they walk past. Disgusting.

I do sympathise with older folk, a pet can make such a difference to the quality of their life. But unless you can look after a pet, you shouldn't own one. Or have a different pet that requires a standard of care that can be managed.

However, she probably did have the dog before she was unable to bend down. What was her attitude like? I just know if it were me, I just couldn't bear to let it happen. It would bother me too much and I'd have to make other arrangements - get a dog walker, or ask other dog owners to pick up or find a dog walking friend etc.

I would be really surprised if a pooper scooper with extended arm has not been invented (Dragon's Den anyone?).

iscream · 15/02/2011 00:07

Well, you did not know she had a bad back when you asked her to pick it up. She should get on of those long handled pooper scooppers.

NinjaCuckoo, your dad can get an inexpensive sock putter on thingy. There are various ones to choose from. www.activeforever.com/p-255-easy-pull-sock-aid.aspx

NinjaCuckoo · 15/02/2011 00:19

:)

Thanks for that link iscream

Being of the old-school make do and mend brigade he has made himself a strange sock-grabby thing utilising some old sugar tongs!

He's a resourceful old sod, god bless him

Scuttlebutter · 15/02/2011 01:24

I'm a responsible dog owner and generally i hate with a passion the awful people who don't pick up.

However, a very dear friend of mine is currently ill with terminal cancer.Sad After she had her initial surgery she was not able to bend down to scoop, although her doctors did encourage her to walk as that would help her recovery. I happen to know she was a very conscientous "scooper" before she was ill and although she is now much frailer, she does in fact pick up when she can. The staff at our local Country Park where we walk were lovely and once they knew her situation do not pounce her on her as they (rightly) would with others and have even offered her a special parking area very close to the grassy areas so she has less far to walk. Sometimes (very rarely) there may be a genuine issue. And as others have said, the dogs predated her diagnosis and have been a huge comfort to her during her illness.

ledkr · 15/02/2011 07:59

ninja of course not Grin did read funny tho didnt it?

ledkr · 15/02/2011 08:01

do sympathise, having just had dd i had months of being unable to put on my own socks, and dh sighing as he bent to do it before we went out.Wish id known about the sock putter onner.

TyraG · 15/02/2011 08:05

YW Totally NBU. I HATE it when dog owners don't pick up after their dogs.

My ma used to have a dog that refused to poop anywhere but his own yard. That worked out pretty well.

DizzyKipper · 15/02/2011 08:07

YANBU - you can get pooper scoopers with long handles on so bending down isn't even an issue. If she really can't bend down then she should have acquired one of these - dog faeces are a health hazard (am reminded of a 2yo girl who lost an eye after rubbing dog faeces in it - had some sort of bacteria/parasite in it and if they didn't remove the eye she would've been killed).

CamperFan · 15/02/2011 08:14

YANBU. It is disgusting.

And Lesley' if she can't bend over, she simply shouldn't have a dog, or make arrangements to go out with someone who can, blah blah, whatever it takes.

However, just read scuttle's story - that's really sad, not sure what to say about it in that case. But I do just hate people leaving dog shit everywhere, makes me so angry.

Ariesgirl · 15/02/2011 09:06

YADDDDDDDDNBU. We had an old man down the street who let his dog shit everywhere including the school playground and our drive. DH caught him in the act, asked him to pick it up and he went mental, accusing DH of persecuting the elderly, that he was dying of emphysema etc (though not enough clearly to prevent him getting up, dressed and walking his dog Hmm). The old bastard flicked the next lot into the drive by the car, where I trod in it, walked it through the car and over the carpets in the house, upstairs etc. DH went berserk and stormed round their house. There hasn't been any shit in the drive since.

Age is no excuse. If they can't look after their animals properly, they shouldn't have them. Harsh but fair.

MissVerinder · 15/02/2011 09:13

YADNBU
There is a girl who walks her snappy horrible little dog near our house, and lets it come and poop at the bottom of our drive. I spoke to her about it and gave her some nappy bags to scoop with. It still poops there, so I have been peeing in a jug and pouring it on doggies favourite pooping place. It works.

looks around to see who's horrified

Ariesgirl · 15/02/2011 09:22

You gave her some bags????

You can report her to the council and get her fined! I know which one I would choose.

When DS was potty training, I used to empty the potty (wee's only obv) onto the front garden. Puts the local cats right off Grin

MissVerinder · 15/02/2011 11:30

Ariesgirl I did give her bags, as much as I wanted to put one round her head and pull...

MissVerinder · 15/02/2011 11:31

BeerTricks I'm thinking of slling it mail order in spray bottles!

MissVerinder · 15/02/2011 11:31
