to be a little upset that the MOT/service and gubbins has cost me more than the car is worth

My bill is £1,000. The car isn't worth much more than that.

Half is service and MOT (including 3 new tyres) and the other half is replacing the cam belt and the clutch cable.

I don't think I'm being ripped off or anything but that is my entire 'treat' money for the next 3 months

A garage could not possibly do a service and an MOT for £70, that would a small service, eg oil and oil filter and top up levels.

MOT's vary because it can be a 'lost leader' for some garages, I have seen them for as little as £25. I leave it to your imagination as to why! Back brake discs and pads can be pricey.Water pump too!

OP you had tyres too! Named ones or budget? this makes a big difference. Budget tyres, can be £30-50 and a named one eg Michelin could be 2-3 times the price, depending on size. If you are not doing a lot of motorway, budgets are great (they are not remoulds).

OP, I think maybe it was OK, hang on to it for a little longer unless.....the engine blows a gasket!

There is nothing like a word of mouth recommendation for a good garage too.
