to be miserable in my promotion

Posted on work but not much traffic.

Was part of a creative team, recently promoted to management. Creative work - which I adored and was good at - has stopped dead in its tracks, now teaching and paperwork. I'm miserable!

Creative buzz, which was coming thick and fast, has dried up totally. Only been in the post 2 weeks but wondering if I've taken a wrong turn? Tremendous opportunities in this role, but want to be back on the team, creating Sad

Should I stick it out?

Tricky one. I'm in a similar position, used to have really fulfilling job as an advisor, now I am in management. I was really excited about the promotion at first, but soon realised that I spent all my time doing rather dull management work (HR stuff, budgets etc) and none of the client contact I used to enjoy.

I'm still in the post 18 months on (on mat leave now)and I have found it does get better. I'd give it a bit longer - I found thaat as time has gone on I have been able to shape my role more to suit my interests and strengths. Also, the longer you are in post the more you gain senior colleagues trust and support and so I have been able to take on bigger strategic projects which I really enjoy. Any chance of you being able to influence the direction of your role?

Thanks for reply Gnome - we seem to be in our own club! Feeling a lot better about it this week, been able to delegate - ruthlessly! - and have been doing some of my own work Smile. feel hugely relieved that I've been able to carve out some time to do what I need to do - need is not an exaggeration. I think I can do both in future, particularly as I settle into the role. Thanks for your support.

It's early days yet, so you might find that you like things more when you've settled in a bit. A new job is always tough.

But I've seen this lots of times tbh - people get promoted because they're good at what they do, and they end up doing management instead. Some make excellent managers and some don't, but if you accept a management role, you really do need to accept that the nature of your job will change - you don't just get more money for doing the same thing iyswim. And managing people can be bloody hard work!!

If you decide after a bit of time that you really don't like your current role, is there any chance that you could go back to what you did before?

glad to hear that this week is better for you smokingnuns (great name by the way Smile)

Well done on the delegating and hope you carry on enjoying your new role!
