To not want to go to Cyprus?

MrsPresley · 13/02/2011 20:38

My lovely inlaws are paying for my DP and our daughter to go to Cyprus for 2 weeks.

Usually MIL comes over here stays with us for a week, takes daughter back for 2 weeks, then brings her back and stays another week before going back, then they come back here and spend about 3 months (they have a caravan here).

I think due to their age (they're now in their early 70's) they're finding it a bit much coming back and forth, so this will be the last time daughter goes over, so they said they would pay for 1 of us to go and I think it should be DP, it would be good for him to spend some time with his parents.

Anyway, DP was off work sick for 3 days in January, he asked his boss if he could take it as holidays but his boss said he couldnt afford to pay him and now we're worried that he's not going to get paid the 2 weeks in April (boss has said he will get paid, but who know what will happen)

Anyway DP said it would be cheaper for me to take 2 weeks unpaid leave and TBH it probably wouldnt be a problem.

But I dont want to go!! I like my inlaws, but I dont like the heat and we've been to Cyprus 3 times before and it was too hot for me (even in April and October) plus (and please dont laugh).........

Inlaws have moved house and it's next to a farm that grows bananas and a couple of times MIL has said she has got up in the morning and found a snake in the house, apparently they're harmless (she chucks them out)but I would die if I saw one, it's the only thing I have a full blown phobia about, I just cant go.

DP and inlaws dont seem to understand my fear and DP says I'm selfish as we cant afford to lose 2 weeks wages, but I say we just make cuts elsewhere and as long as the rents paid we'll manage after all if he went off sick for 2 weeks or more we'd have to manage!

And if he does get paid, then no problem!

AIBU?

tigitigi She's 9 and TBH I wouldnt feel comfortable letting her fly on her own. Anyway DP's ticket is paid for, it's the holiday pay that's bothering him other than he wants to go.

And it's everything else that's bothering money but not the money Grin If he doesnt get paid I just have to cut back on other stuff for a few weeks, but we'll manage Smile

9 is plenty old enough given the supervision they have - I would not let a 9 yo take a train alone but be fine with a plane esp to Cyprus which is safe and nearby. That said you have to be comfortable with it and if not it is not a solution (does that make any sense!)

I sympathise with the snakes but looks like you might have to go (could you get a ticket for your son to go or could he go with your daughter instead) at 17 he would be old enough to be responsible for her and get time with the GPs.

Cam you recommend good hotel in ny hardhat!

Op - just tell your dh to go!

AllGoodNamesGone · 13/02/2011 22:49

Keep working on him. Maybe do a breakdown of costs to show that you can manage without his pay if you have to. There would be two less people to feed for one thing!

Probably play down the snake issue, if none of them have phobias they will find it hard to understand why it worries you so much. I would be cool with a snake but, as I said, am terrified of spiders so totally get where you are coming from but have experienced people being very impatient with me about it.

I think the reason likely to get most sympathy is not wanting to leave your son on his own so focus on that perhaps Grin

MrsPresley · 13/02/2011 22:50

Son wouldnt go, they're not his grandparents (previous relationship).

I'm not going and that's that! (stamps foot ) Grin

As I said it's only the money thats worrying DP, but as long as there's enough for the important stuff to be paid when he's away other stuff can wait till I've been paid.

Plus that's only if he doesnt get paid, he might, we'll just have to wait and see, if he does get paid then everything will be ok.

Also he works so hard the holiday will do him good.

Yes but it's self catering :) but it is 5 mins walk from grand central station and the place is a converted apartment complex and the rooms are beyond huge (which you don't tend to get in NY)

Look up Eastgate Tower Hotel :) it's a great city to go self catering in as there are so many places to eat you won't want to stay in the hotel to do so (just go to the deli on the corner to grab some fresh bits to keep in the kitchen)

I have stayed in Protaras, Paphos and Ayia Napa. All great!

My mum and my family come from NIcossia, my mum said that it was so hot that she never ate until she moved to the UK many moons ago.
