Ok so I sound a bit mental...but hear me out.

I have never had a tumble dryer before and we bought a second hand one a few weeks ago, aren't they bloody marvellous!!!!

I had the idea that I would dry clothes as before and just use dryer when no more room on clothes horse/radiators.
But in reality I can't stop using it all the time and feel bad about enviromental effects and cost of running it so much. Blush

Am now dreading electric bill Sad

In my defence I have a 2.6 DS currently being potty trained and 10 week old DD plus me and DH's washing.

So how often do you use yours and aibu to use mine so much?

(And is there such a thing as Appliances Anonymous??)

LessNarkyPuffin · 13/02/2011 16:46

YANBU! I was exactly the same as you a few months back!

sparkle101 · 13/02/2011 16:49

YADNBU I too have found the delights of a tumble dryer in the last few months. Some days I look round deliberately for things to wash and dry Blush

Annpan88 · 13/02/2011 16:51

I used mine loads in the summer, only reason I've switched to radiator is cause in the flat we don't have a vent and using it would mean keeping back door open. I miss it loads and am sick of my spare room being covered in clothes. Am jelous of you. They are amazing.

darkmornings · 13/02/2011 16:52

I love my tumble drier I don't put everything in I always check labels. Couldn't imagine having towels and bedding drying all over the house it would take ages.

ethelina · 13/02/2011 16:52

In this weather, everyday. There's no feckin way i'm having 2-day old washing clogging up banisters and clothes horses and radiators. When the sun comes out it all goes on the line, when not...

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 13/02/2011 16:52

Mine is happy whirring away in the utility room as I type Smile

I didn't have room for a tumble dryer in my last house and was adamant I didn't really need one when we moved to this house. But we had a nice shiny new utility room and was persuaded by DP to buy a gas one; just for bedding and towels, you understand.

I dry practically everything in it, especially in winter. The only think I don't do is jeans and delicates. In summer, I use the washing line as much as possible. Which, living in Ireland, is about twice a year if we're lucky!

So, no. YANBU. Who wants their house to look like a Chinese laundry anyway?

roadtrain · 13/02/2011 16:56

Used everyday all year round. No shame or guilt whatsoever.

Because:

  1. Each family member needs far fewer clothes so that is better for the environment - things can be washed and dried in 90 mins.

  2. The damp from the clothes goes out of the exhaust pipe thing rather than into the house like it would if we dried inside. Better for our lungs.

  3. I never ever iron anything, saving energy.

Tumble dryer use is fine IMO.

bizzieb33 · 13/02/2011 16:57

If you dry clothes on radiators the heat can't get in to the room so you need them higher (more use of power), also there will be less humidity so less mould growth round windows etc. So in conclusion I think you would be YWBU not to use it!Grin

ceasar04 · 13/02/2011 16:58

Thats why I love Mumsnet...no-one saying what a loon you are!!!

I am loving that my radiators are clear and dining room actaully looks like it should instead of laundry.

I even like cleaning the fluff filter out!!! Blush

Will try and forget the looming bill and not put heating on when dryer is running, think that will be my compromise!

Why would you use it in the summer when the sun is shining? Isn't that a total waste of money not to mention electricity?

valleyqueen · 13/02/2011 17:02

I do all bedding, school shirts and towels in mine, I love fluffy towels. so about twice a week

The rest goes on a massive airer which I put down the end of my massively long hallway out of sight. I remmeber having my old house looking like a laundry and I hated it.

roadtrain · 13/02/2011 17:08

Ariesgirl:

-it's quicker

-you don't have to iron it

-I don't own a washing line or garden airer thing

CrosswordAddict · 13/02/2011 17:09

ceasar04
My tumble dryer conked out two years ago and I never replaced it.
I have three airers during the winter and just hang things on them before I go to bed. They are dry by morning ready to iron, put away or even wear straight away.
In summer I use the whirly clothes line outside.
Don't miss the t.d. at all and our bill is lower.
BTW an American friend who was living here told me Americans never use anything but the tumble drier. What a waste of that lovely weather they get!
it's my contribution to not increasing global warming IYSWIM

You must have a warm house Smile!!

Used to do similar and leave it out overnight but washing was never totally dry in the morning especially in winter. Had to have heating on alot to dry whole families washing, became much more noticable after DD was born.

And I will definitley not be using it in the summer Smile

valiumredhead · 13/02/2011 17:21

There's no way I'd get clothes dry from hanging up over night! I use my TD all the time - love it and it's very economical to use - about £2 a week if I have it on every day.

doricpatter · 13/02/2011 17:32

Mine's vented so needs an open window. That alone makes sure it's not overused, especially at this time of year! I hate using it - big soggy things still go on airers to start with then get finished in the dryer. In summer I use the line - even on showery days, I put things on airers then run in and out with them depending on the rain status!

Bumpsadaisie · 13/02/2011 17:38

Am a bit baffled by tumble driers tbh. I do a wash, hang it up on the pulley maid in the utility, its dry by next day. Is this unusual?

valiumredhead · 13/02/2011 17:40

Depends on how warn your house is bumps - no way would anything dry over night in my utility room as it's chilly in there.

Bumpsadaisie · 13/02/2011 17:53

I guess it must be warm, then. It does have underfloor heating under the tiles so maybe it just all rises up and dries it.

Nippolopolis · 13/02/2011 18:05

I use mine everyday too. Used to put it in the garden but unless it was sunny it took 2 days to dry!

We have underfloor heating throughout so no radiators to drape it over. My electric bill went up by about £1 p/month when I switched to full time tumble drier use!

Nippolopolis · 13/02/2011 18:07

dryer. sorry

valiumredhead · 13/02/2011 18:22

Think you were right the first time Nipp Grin......... or is it dryer, I'm confused now!

I can't stand all that will it rain/won't it rain - dashing out to get all the washing in if it does rain, so it only goes out if it's blazing hot.
