to think Cameron is going to put our children at risk?

David Cameron, talking about the big society:

"if someone wants to help out with children, we will sweep away the criminal record checks and health and safety laws that stop them."

What?!

The CRB checks that are in place are a good thing IMO. I'm very happy that any adult that my DC is left alone with has been CRB checked.

Why on earth would you want to circumvent that?

Previous thread here.

General consensus was that the proposed revisions (not abolition) was indeed sensible.

No mention of H&S though.

but a CRB check is out of date the minute it's issued and is only useful if the person has been caught and charged, so I actually agree with getting rid of them, they are time consuming and lull people into a false sense of security IMO
and it's not exactly stopped people who abuse children getting to children

scaryteacher · 13/02/2011 11:24

CRB is a waste of time and tells you nothing except that the person hasn't been caught if they are an abuser.

It has gone too far; look at the case of the flower ladies from that cathedral who needed an enhanced CRB because they might have contact with the choir boys!

squeakytoy · 13/02/2011 11:33

but without a crb check, you would then have the risk of convicted people getting jobs that they should not be allowed to have...

I do agree that the CRB does only show that someone hasnt been convicted and is no proof of innocence, but it does act as deterrent to those who do have a record.

Punkatheart · 13/02/2011 11:37

I am divided on this. I was told by at friend who worked in social services that real criminals, the ones with intent, can find ways to cheat the CRB checks. Who is going to subject themselves to something that they know will highlight an issue?

Guiding has a real problem with getting volunteers because there is too much red tape...

But yes, the deterrent is there.

As I said, divided.

YABU... and you're so out of touch, you're being scary! There have been changes made but CRB checks are still required for people to have prolongued/regular unsupervised contact with children. As I understand it, in situations where there is supervised contact and where the contact is sporadic CRB checks will no longer be automatically required. CRB checks will also be applicable across different activities rather than needing a separate one for each. I think this strikes a better balance.
