before wading in and pulling you up on something/asking about something that was already addressed (multiple times)?

I understand that not everyone wants to truffle through pages and pages, but when accusations are levelled (accusations over things that are untrue and stated as so earlier on in the thread) or insults thrown based on wholly inaccurate and point-blank incorrect things, is this nutty nuts?!

On the other hand, am I just too naive and new to MN?!

One should never allow the facts to stand in the way of a good bunfight.

I think that's on the mumsnet coat of arms.

Probably in Latin.

Grin

And one of these feckers will actually be able to come along and put that in latin for me Grin

Spenguin · 12/02/2011 23:23

But why can't they be iced buns?

OP posts:
mamadiva · 12/02/2011 23:24

I did try to google it but it was'nt happening :o

To be fair OP I am kind of awful for this, anything over 3 pages and I generally skim the first three then read the last and post... but then I go back over it so does that make it okay?

DaphneHeartsFred · 12/02/2011 23:26

Oportet nunquam sino res revereor via bonus crustum pugna

LibraPoppyGirl · 12/02/2011 23:29

YANBU.

I use the MN trick in your customise options to highlight the posters posts.

If it's a really really long thread then I read the posters posts thoroughly and skim the rest, you can usually get a good representation of where the thread is up to that way. You can then comment fairly safe in the knowledge that you won't make too much of an idiot of yourself or upset anyone Smile

Spenguin · 12/02/2011 23:30

Well, this thread was partially done out of selfish reasons. I did the 'BF/GF exclusion at wedding' thread and some people posted purely to insult! Shock

Luckily, some very lovely MNetters stuck up for me.

It's fine to skim, I think, if it's a certain kind of thread. However, when so many people just kept putting their foot in it (hope that doesn't come across as arrogant), I just gave up responding and correcting e.g. 'why are you being so blah-blah about X?! You cow!' etc and yet I'm sat there thinking 'bloody hell! What a line to take when had you bothered to read the thread you would realise what a cowyou are for saying that!'

Humpfh!

Off to watch 'Air Force One' and take the piss out of all the 'USA! USA! USA! America saves the entirrrrrrrre world' in front of the American DP.

[and maybe perve on Harrison Ford]

muggglewump · 12/02/2011 23:30

YANBU.
But, why read, when you can post and judge?

I've had it done to me.
I was horrified, but laughed at the same time.

Really, how stupid do you have to be to comment on something you haven't read, and it's obvious you haven't read it?

It's a case of, 'Never let the truth get in the way of a good judgey pants'!

DaphneHeartsFred · 12/02/2011 23:32

That would be

"Nunquam permissum verum invado via of a bonus sentio"

cyb · 12/02/2011 23:34

I havent read the whole thread but I think you should buy the brown boots not the black ones

scottishmummy · 12/02/2011 23:36

YABU

I don't have time to trawl through every single post in minute detail. I answer the OP's original question if i don't have time to read everything as that's the whole point isn't it.

I have a job and a life. Perhaps others who have time to read everything don't.....

FabbyChic · 13/02/2011 00:38

If a thread is seven pages long Im only going to read the OP's posts.

Sorry but it would take an hour to read the whole lot. Albeit generally I won't post on a thread that has seven pages of posts.

Not everybody reads the whole thread and they say so too. For future reference I only read the OP's posts.

So if something gets repeated by me, tough boobies.

Spenguin · 13/02/2011 00:47

Nah, need for clarifications are ok really.

It's when people start name-calling when they're doing that based on something that is incorrect; and they would know that had they read the thread. I saw another poster, on inaccurate grounds, called a 'bitch'! Meanwhile, the abuser was on about 'girl power' and female solidarity etc.

OP posts:
RustyBear · 13/02/2011 08:08

You should at least read all the OP's posts if you're going to comment - it doesn't take that long now you can highlight them, and you don't have to waste time with pages either.

If you don't bother then your comment risks being useless, which would be even more of a waste of your valuable time, or if you're being bitchy about something the OP has explained further, it just makes you look stupid.

ScroobiousPip · 13/02/2011 08:23

Ooooh, LibraPoppyGirl, thank you! I'd seen MNHQ posts in blue before but had no idea about customising other posters.

I've got OP's posts in Forest Green, and mine in Silver. Very nice.

onimolap · 13/02/2011 08:24

I've been annoyed with someone who didn't even read the OP (asking for films for 7 and 10 year old boys) and was quite aggressive when other posters pointed out that "Thelma and Louise" wasn't really suitable.

And also with posters who scribble on good threads - the trouble is, I think they do that deliberately. The "good grades" thread was a really good quality of debate, but has now attracted a "I haven't read the thread but this so obvious, YABU" comment.

It's a shame.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 13/02/2011 08:24

In general I agree with you. However, using your own thread as an example wasn't a great idea. Some people just didn't agree with your motives, you have to expect that. I don't think people were particularly harsh with you. That's not to say it doesn't happen on other threads.

Oooh, sorry, I haven't read the whole thread but I think YABU.

ThePosieParker · 13/02/2011 08:32

Haven't read the thread but has anyone mentioned....? Grin

You're right OP, but I definitely do it myself.

Pingpong · 13/02/2011 08:44

YANBU it is a pet hate of mine. I don't even look at the big threads if I don't have time to read it properly. Recently I was interested in the Eastenders storyline threads but they quickly reached unreadable lengths so I just didn't get round to reading and commenting.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 13/02/2011 11:31

The thing that I don't understand is how people think they can contribute to a discussion if they aren't listening. Because that is what barging into a thread without bothering to read at least what the OP is saying. It is failing to take the time to understand the situation you are commenting on.

When you do that, you often make a tit of yourself and, at best, simply have nothing useful to contribute.

So really you're just posting because you like the - well, if the discussion was being had verbally, the phrase would be "likes the sound of their own voice". Grin You're not in it to contribute in a meaningful or useful way, you just want to be read.

scottishmummy · 13/02/2011 11:42

all this should do this, read this,be au fait with all op pertinent and recent points and be prepared to harvard reference, spellcheck each post is total mince

and if a thread has a gazillion posts, will read op have glance and post.is meant to be fun spontaneous online chat -recreational blah, blah not rl demanding a thorough précis
