to be a bit miffed at this assistant in a charity shop?

I had a big clear out last week, loads of books and some decent clothes, (Next, Wallis, M&S etc)

I understand charity shops can get lots of stuff given to them, so I went into the shop to ask them if they wanted it and when I could drop it off. Man tells me today would be great, knock on back door and they would come and get it? Hmm

So I this morning, I pop along, rings bell, open boot to get two black bags. Assistant comes out, groans, pulls a face and says 'we don't really need anymore books, how many are there' quite abruptly and rude! I felt really embarrassed and just stood there, she reluctantly took them off me, huffing and puffing!

Wish I'd taken them to a different charity now? Or does this happen alot in charity shops, never heard of them being picky before!! Confused

Due to at least THREE charity shops' sniffiness about my donations in this town (and it wasn't junk!) I now give all my old kids clothes to the local Womens Aid refuge for their ladies and kids living there. They don't get sniffy.

Whether they needed the books or not, pulling a face and moaning is not good customer service. There are ways of handling situations like this, but acting like a stroppy kid isn't one of them. For all he knew, there could have been some valuable first editions in the box, so the least he could have done was accept them and if they weren't suitable, ebay them or send them for recycling.

A lot of the bigger charity shops have a minimum price they are allowed to put on goods. This means, for example, that a T shirt has to be priced at a minimum of £3.

Nobody with any sense is going to pay £3 for a secondhand run-of-the-mill T shirt when they can get 2 or 3 new ones from Primark.

If items were sold at a lower price thenpeople would buy them, the stock would turnover quickly and money would be in the tills.

It used to drive my Mum insane when she volunteered at our local cancer charity shop

I have experienced this too. Was even told they didn't want my junk. This was over the phone so hadn't seen any of it to judge.

I had this sniffiness too - I said 'fine' and asked for it all (some of it quite expensive) back and took it elsewhere.

With babyclothes, the staff were deciding who would have what. I agree it all needs to go on the shelves to up the general quality of stuff in the shop now.

mummytowillow yes we were chatting on the Welsh thread last week & we live in the same area,i have name changed since then.

I have given stuff to that shop before & vowed never again, they are ungrateful & quite rude.

Same here with our local Mind shop. Donated some lovely (Phase 8, Hobbs etc) clothes to be met with 'don;t you have any mens clothes? We have loads of women's stuff'.Hmm

RunAwayWife · 15/02/2011 08:04

Our cancer charity shop is like this I would not give them the drippings from my nose let alone anything decent.

I tend to give it all to the shooting stars hospice and the FARA shop, both are lovely and when my sisters Husband left her I took all his clothes (most designer) to the FARA shop, they were most happy Grin

Our local charity shop have no idea about pricing. They charge the same price second hand (or sometimes more) for cheap Primark clothes. I just have to make sure i know which labels etc are from which shops!
