to think I should be able toleave my wheelie bin out on bin day without having it nicked!

This is the second time that my bin has been nicked.

I put it out for collection before I go to work and when I come home it's gone.

I live in a small cul de sac in a residential area.

The bin has my house number painted on it in 6" high letters.

I was told I would have to pay for a replacement.

What's going on?

I'm tempted to report it to the Police now it's happened for a second time. Angry.

Our Wheelie bin went missing once. I decided that the bin men didnt put it on the van properly and it fell in, therefore it being lost forever.

However Im surprised you have to pay.

ghosteditor · 11/02/2011 19:29

oh [sympathy], this happened to us at work, we had to pay for a new one (it was only still out because they didn't pick up on time Hmm )

I heard that there is a reward if they are 'handed in' so am speculating that they might be stolen on demand...

taintedpaint · 11/02/2011 19:36

Where do you live, Wet? They are pinched to be sold around here (Herts). IIRC, they make about £20 per bin, so it's reasonably lucrative!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 11/02/2011 19:41

Our bin went missing 4 weeks ago - but the bin-men did at least admit they had fed it into the crusher on the waggon.

Should get our (free) replacement any day now.

Tortington · 11/02/2011 19:42

my recycling bin has been stolen 4 TIMES. BECUASE THE bin men do not have it in their contract to replace the bin outside my gate - just to leave it at the end of the road.

there fore i dont recycle

Olessaty · 11/02/2011 19:57

It's so annoying. I have had six bins stolen since I moved in to the property 3.5 years ago, the seventh time it happened I walked up and down the street raving at the top of my voice about dirty chavs who would steal a bin from a lone parent with little money who has to pay £20 a time for their thievery, it was stolen because I was in hospital with my DS and thus not there first thing in the morning to take it back in as the bin men were finished with it.

So I told my neighbour on the doorstep (he's a dealer, runs the street with an iron fist, I'm usually too scared of him to even talk) and he told one of the lads that I should have a bin in the next ten minutes (as if by magic mine reappeared), and that they can take my bins out from now on. So far nothing stolen, and bins go out and come back in magically all by themselves.

Not the best solution, but thank goodness, because it's so frustrating being out of pocket for this sort of thing.

OmniaParatus · 11/02/2011 20:24

Bloody hell Olessaty, 6 times and you have to get your local dealer to look out for it for you!

My next door neighbours stole my bin because it was newer than theirs, and covered it with hideous gnome stickers Angry.

Fortunately, as I am pg, when DS2 is born I will be entitled to a bigger bin for free as we will be a family of five. I shall paint my house number on it in giant letters, and have fun watching them trying to figure out how to nick it this time!

Olessaty · 11/02/2011 20:37

The council do absolutely nothing about it, except charge you for a new one and take a few weeks to deliver it. I did think about reporting it to the police, but I wasn't sure they'd not be annoyed at me, and having them in the street results in a visit from aforementioned neighbour to find out what's up and why they were around. Last time I was getting harassed by my ex's violent ex, threatened in front of the kids and all that tosh, I had the police around, then my neighbour, the police offered a warning visit and so did the bloody dealer, though I got the idea his visit would have been a damned sight less pleasant for her. Backing out of that kind offer of "help" was interesting.

Cannot wait to move out of this area. Sigh.

SandStorm · 11/02/2011 20:42

When mine went I wasn't charged for a new one. I was told it might have been damaged by the binmen when they banged it against the lorry and they might have then disposed of it. I was told it would be 6 - 8 weeks before a new one arrived but it was there in less than two. It now has our housename all over it!

Fink · 11/02/2011 20:45

I also don't recycle cos I've been going through the same farce for the past 5 years...

I phone the council to ask for a bin, they deliver it during the working day when I and all the neighbours I get on with are at work, by the time I get home from work it's gone. Angry

I finally thought I had it made when I got pg, looked forward for months to the day when I would be at home in the daytime to welcome the new bin into the bosom of our family, only to find the council were out of stock while I was on mat leave and couldn't deliver another one until I was back at work Hmm Still, at least I don't have to negotiate with dealers, I just have averagely anti-social bin stealing neighbours!

TheDevilAndTheDeepBlueSea · 11/02/2011 20:49

Mine had been nicked a few times. I didn't have to pay for the replacements though. But you know what dd saw one day out of her bedroom window?

Both of my bins, with the number massive and in paint, in NEXT DOORS GARDEN Angry

So I marched round to collect them obviously, and they haven't spoken to me since Smile

RandyRussian · 11/02/2011 21:00

Are you sure the skips are being nicked? Our arseholes colectors nearly always put them back in the wrong gardens so each wednesday sees us all running around getting our own skips back.

This despite them all having the house numbers stickered on them.
