112 CCTV cameras in a schoool ....oh yes.

I saw it in a tabloid; but I suspect the Coventry Evening telegraph is giving it some wellie.

It will be a large school; but 112 cameras.

The school just said "we have not got them in the toilets? well, yes.

Any advance on 112? (I suspect not)

cheers...like spring with me today. "Gabbie"

The Mail is running with the story too.

This is something I really despise Gabz, like the article says it's more like a prison than a school, and the cash would have been better spent on teaching the children something important.

I wonder whether they built up the numbers of cameras over a period of time, or did they just go in one Monday morning and there was Big Brother benevolently watching over them all?

What do you think Gabz?

GabbyLoggon · 11/02/2011 14:59

Agent zigzag.

I think they were probably built up over a long period of time. (and maybe a history of trouble)

I take your point about the way tabs treat stories.

I think it's a good idea. I'm not that long out of high school and I remember that a lot of stuff went on that really shouldn't have. Teachers may well have eyes in the backs of their heads, but they can't be everywhere at once, and teenagers can be pretty evil.

rinabean · 11/02/2011 15:07

Oh, and I'm surprised it's made national news! (I live in Coventry) Everyone here is more annoyed right now about striking taxi drivers...

GabbyLoggon · 11/02/2011 15:10

Yes, Ringbean , I can imagine that.

My county had the first case of a boy actually being killed in school by another boy. Awful business. "Gabby"

It might seem like an easy answer to teenagers being twats to each other rina, but I think it's better to teach them to respect and be tolerant of other people.

Putting up CCTV cameras just watches the acts take place and doesn't resolve any problems at all, and gets children used to being watched by faceless government employees.

I don't want any of this for my children.

onimolap · 11/02/2011 15:14

You could be very cynical and say it's softening them up young for a surveillance society.

I've a practical concern: how would that many cameras be properly monitored? You'd be so unlikely to be watching the right one at the right time to stop an incident.

AgentZigzag · 11/02/2011 15:18

And more to the point who is monitoring/has access to them onimolap?

Like you say, it sets up a false sense of security that if we're being watched by them then everything is OK.

They don't make me feel safe at all, if they did anything to stop crimes taking place why are there so many TV progs chock a block with CCTV camera footage?

Saltatrix · 11/02/2011 15:21

In schools I think it's a good idea so much behaviour and bullying goes unwitnessed.

rinabean · 11/02/2011 15:22

I don't think the school can teach the really bad ones to behave, though. Surely the school system tried to make them into good people all along, right? But they are getting the opposite lessons from somewhere else.

I was badly bullied at school and with bullying it tends to come down to one person's word versus another's. I was lucky because I was a model student, well-liked by most of the staff and so the teachers believed me. I really feel for all the kids who are bullied but who don't get good grades, sometimes misbehave, or just look like someone the teacher dislikes. At least with CCTV there is a chance there will be evidence on their side.

I like CCTV. I don't think it stops crime, though sometimes people might be dissuaded by the presence of the cameras, but it makes it far more likely that victims will be believed and justice can be served.

lospollos · 11/02/2011 15:30

Its a difficult one for me.

From a victim of bullying at school CCTV may have made a difference.

often dinnerladies/teachers are so lazy even when witnessing bullying do little. I adre say iys their attitude that needs adjusting not security, i has obvious pros. see who comes in and out etc.

but 112? its a bit big brother , and the having the whole'you are being watched' from such a young age has got to have an effect and the idea of conflict resolution amongst kids may decrease.

AgentZigzag · 11/02/2011 15:36

I was bullied too lospollos.

The bullies will just go and do it elsewhere where there aren't any CCTVs, they manage when teachers are supposedly watching.

It does nothing to address their behaviour, and encourages the idea that children are criminals who need watching.

This might be true of a small % of children who have had distressing/disturbing lives and cause problems for other children, but don't go lumping the 98% of other children who have no behavioural issues in with them.

InWithTheITCrowd · 11/02/2011 16:45

We have CCTV in our school (not 112!!) and it was a fine thing that we did, when we had the school broken into and 20 Apple Macs stolen. CCTV identified the thieves, who are now locked away. It's worth remembering that schools are also buildings which house expensive equipment, and not just errant youth.
112 seems excessive, but I know some schools that are considering putting cameras in every classroom, and when you factor in camers on corners of buildings, etc, it would probably soon mount up

GabbyLoggon · 11/02/2011 16:48

I am learning a lot from you posters on this.

thanks "Gabby"

In our school we found a pupil's mobile phone today after another kid sneaked into the changing rooms during pe - camera is outside changing rooms!

more importantly, a staff member has been found not guilty of sexual assault on 2 girls because of cameras - he's been through an absolutely horrific time. took a year to go to trial!

AgentZigzag · 11/02/2011 20:46

I hope the police and criminal justice system rely on more than just CCTV cameras to investigate and prosecute sexual assaults princess.
