Loads of threads today in which the OP details a very specific situation they are in at the moment, asking for advice and opinions. (Not a thread about a thread, so you can read on). I would imagine that if I were the person being complained about in the OP, I would recognise myself instantly from the topic, even if fine details have been changed. Do any of you think, or even care, if you are recognised?

AIBU to think there could be backlash from finding out that someone recognised you posting about them on an internet forum?

You KNOW the RSPCA banned you from doing that any more...

Pan · 10/02/2011 22:23

hey, I am a god. And we are married.

StarlightPrincess · 10/02/2011 22:25

I wouldn't say anything on here that I wouldn't say in real life, and for that reason I have my pics up, Doesn't bother me.

What Tee said. I'm the same in real life, too. So sue me.

Portofino · 10/02/2011 22:27

Nah, I would be obvious to any one that knows me. And I know Mnetters in RL, and talk on FB to others. If anyone wanted to really stalk me.....

On the other hand, I have a policy of never posting stuff on the internet that I wouldn't say in RL.

Yep same as many, as Mumbar I'm honest about me and DS etc and only post generally or ask advice about things I wouldn't mind RL people knowing about.

I namechange for specifics, have also posted on behalf of a friend who was on phone in tears wanting some help. Agree with littlered who said you recognise the posters replying so know what advice to take and what to ignore Grin

AnnMarlow · 10/02/2011 22:55

I was found on mn by a RL friend - I posted avout a situation happening at school and when she found herself in the same situation she googled and up came the thread. Didn't help that I had the sane Twitter user name as on here and photos on my profile. Ended up having v long phone conversation with her and instant name changes.

Am name changing a lot at the moment as have been a bit too open about something going on at the moment and am worried about being found. Not posting about it in any recent names. And no profile any more

hogshead · 10/02/2011 22:56

yes I consider it but I also always consider whether the content of my post would affect my working life (governed by strict codes of practice) so generally I am quite careful - I also apply this to facebook too.

my sister is a recent convert to MN but she knows most of what i post about anyway Grin

lospollos · 10/02/2011 22:57

I know certain peeps arent on here, I namechange too on sensitive subjects

BertieBotts · 10/02/2011 23:04

I do know that I'm recognisable and sometimes consider namechanging when posting about e.g. my ex, but TBH the situation is so complicated that I'd rather have the backstory under the same name. I very much doubt he would stumble across my posts, since he could barely work the forum, he could never remember exactly what my name was or how it was spelt, and the chance he might google the same things I post about is infinitesimal. If he did recognise himself, well, everything I have said is true.

But for other people whose internet habits/skills I'm not certain of I wouldn't talk about them, especially not in an identifiable way. School etc situations haven't come up yet but it's something to bear in mind as DS gets older.

Punkatheart · 10/02/2011 23:06

Is that you, mother?

MsKLo · 10/02/2011 23:08
