I thought that is a bit strong, duckie.

I would guess she meant people have difficulty keeping to a diet. (I suppose most of us do)

But "useless" is a very strong word.

I agree with her.

I don't know anyone who has lost weight permanently by going on a diet. They just seem to make people very boring, miserable and food-obsessed. I think that dieting is psychologically unhealthy as well as potentially physically damaging in some cases.

If anyone at work tells me that they're on a diet I probably wouldn't want to have lunch with them and have to listen to them drone on about calories and points...

The only people I know who've lost significant weight in the long-term have made major lifestyle changes (e.g. taking up a new sport, getting rid of their car, moving to a new country where there's less processed food on offer etc.. ).
