...to think that if you drove a less flashy and more fuel efficient car.....

....then you wouldn't have to almost come to blows with someone else over an item on the final reductions rail in M&S?

As witnessed this morning at my local retail park. Woman concerned was driving a massive Land Rover/Range Rover -the flashy WAG sort not a practical mud-splattered one. Later seen having a stand-off with another customer as to who had picked the reduced item up first.

I found it quite amusing TBH so thought I'd share! (intending a tongue-in-cheek thread not a huge kick-off about 4x4s etc BTW)

She probably spent twice the value of the item concerned on petrol to get there Wink

kreecherlivesupstairs · 09/02/2011 12:33

But have you considered that in order to finance her car she needs the reduction.

NorbertDentressangle · 09/02/2011 12:35

But to lower yourself to playing tug of war with an item in M&S Shock...how terribly non-flashy Range Rover driver

Wink

I think having a public spat over a sale item in a high-street shop is very flashy-Range-Rover-driver.

TheButterflyCollector · 09/02/2011 12:39

I think that having fuel-efficient, eco-friendly dull little car would be bloody boring. And no, I've never had a row over an item in M&S, or anywhere else for that matter. :)

GMajor7 · 09/02/2011 12:39

I'm sure it was a Per Una turquoise chrocheted scarf or something similar Smile

Wink I'm on the opposite side of the scale, LeQueen, a petrolhead with connections to the motor industry. If it's fast and sleek, I'm interested! :o

NorbertDentressangle · 09/02/2011 12:45

The item is question was a hideous sequinned Hello Kitty girls vest top.

The woman wasn't at all WAG-like, more 'yummy-mummy' (sorry I don't particularly like that term but it fits IYSWIM. Not the sort that you can imagine scrapping.

See I just don't find driving a house on wheels particularly exciting, the daily
"Wonder who could be underneath my wheels",

"How can I get up this little street with my ginormo replacement cock wagon and not whack everyone's wing mirrors off?"

"Shall I worry about taking 2 spaces up in the school carpark or just re-apply my make up nonchalantly?"

I can see how some people would find it thrilling though Wink

NorbertDentressangle · 09/02/2011 12:47

ButterflyCollector I'm not saying that everyone should drive small, fuel efficient cars but there is a happy medium to be found.

That way she could shop in M&S without losing all dignity Wink

OP posts:
NorbertDentressangle · 09/02/2011 12:50

lol at "cock wagon" Grin

On the parking issue, the reason I noticed her in the first place was that it took her a couple of attempts to drive forwards into the middle space of a row of 3 empty spaces.

OP posts:
Lizzylou · 09/02/2011 12:50

Was it an M&S prawn sandwich?
I could sell my Granny for one at the moment.

Bloody low carb diet.

TheButterflyCollector · 09/02/2011 12:52

My idea of a happy medium :o

SnowieBear · 09/02/2011 12:57

Would never have happened to me... I drive a Prius, so I obviously crochet my own clothes from old cat furballs.

OTheHugeManatee · 09/02/2011 13:03

Snowie Aha, you're a Prius driver.

Do you drive at 5mph under the speed limit all the time? Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 09/02/2011 13:07

I can't open the link and am intrigued now.

I was driving our little Micra at the time -its amazing as it comes with a special Cloak of Invisibility Hmm. Nobody stops or gives way for you when you're driving it, even when its clearly your right of way. Its like being invisible.

We also have a much bigger car (Citroen) and thats completely different as people are more considerate

Would I get 2 boys in the back of that TheButterflycollector?

And would I get trees on the dash display for exceptional eco-friendly driving like DH's Insight has??? Wink

But yes, red is my colour as well, I could be swayed, kids or no kids, eco trees or not Grin

SnowieBear · 09/02/2011 13:08

Hi Manatee, no, I don't... I have cultivated over the years a profound dislike of people who do so. A special, burning hatred is reserved in my heart for those who force you to follow them at 45mph on a 60mph limit and then proceed to drive at 40mph when entering a 30mph Hmm.

Plus I do too many miles a year trekking up and down the country for work - the sooner I can get home safely to DH & DS, the better!

Malificence · 09/02/2011 13:24

If we didn't drive fuel efficient diesels, our fuel bill would be more than our bloody mortgage!
DH does 400 miles a week, it's an 80 mile round trip to where he works and it costs him @£35 in diesel, his colleauge lives not far from us and drives a petrol guzzler, it costs him £65 a week (which is more than me and DH put together)! He won't change cars because "he doesn't like diesels" Hmm pillock.
I can outgun all the boy racers at the lights in my 2 litre diesel too, due to the low end torque .

I always find there are more Porsches, Range Rovers and Jags outside Aldi than Tesco too.

OTheHugeManatee · 09/02/2011 13:31

Snowie Oh good. Though you're in a minority Hmm

There is something special about countryside drivers who do 40mph everywhere, isn't there. I share your burning hatred.

My other special, burning hatred is for urban drug salesmobile drivers (typically mid-range Audis/BMWs) who think that because I'm female and driving a Mini Cooper they can pull out into the space I happen to be occupying at that moment. (Norbert, I feel your pain).

I've learned to lean on the horn and accelerate when they try it on. But I'm sure I'm contributing to London's reputation for nasty drivers Blush

SnowieBear · 09/02/2011 13:36

Oh, London driving! Gosh, I do feel for you Manatee, it takes a special character to brave that one. I avoid it like the plague - they don't pay me enough to risk a heart attack, it's the train and tube, disgusting as they are, or nothing.

scaryteacher · 09/02/2011 13:43

We possess a Range Rover (12 years old) which is converted to run on LPG (greener). I don't know where on the flash spectrum that puts us, as dh uses said RR for towing his glider and retrieving other glider pilots and their aircraft from muddy fields inaccessible or fatal to an ordinary car's suspension.

OTheHugeManatee · 09/02/2011 13:47

I think it helps that I cycle around London a lot too, so am used to anticipating blind, selfish acts of traffic bastardry and whizzing out of the way before they can get me. Grin

Also having a Mini is a great help, as they're very nippy with great visibility and accelerate quickly.

If you're doing long distance driving I can see why a Prius is a good idea. I just wish they didn't remind me of these Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 09/02/2011 14:08

scaryteacher -that sounds legitimate and not flashy to me.

I expect the only off-road experience this mornings had had was when its parked half on the kerb outside the school gates.

re:London driving -sod fuel economy etc, I think I would only brave that in <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.dicts.info/img/ud/tank2.jpg&imgrefurl=www.dicts.info/picture-dictionary.php%3Fw%3Darmy&usg=__PveAE4NQpmXdZfguGHDJvLeCA2s=&h=376&w=376&sz=14&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=vzW86rUD-VVOiM:&tbnh=144&tbnw=144&ei=pending&prev=/images%3Fq%3Darmy%2Btank%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D620%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=386&oei=lZ9STZ68CoqLhQfN7KnPCA&esq=3&page=1&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0&tx=53&ty=76" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">one of these Grin
