To be worried about a pink blotchy rash...

At bathtime DS (15 months) had a strong pink blotchy rash on his chest. I put a glass on it and it did seem to fade. He had a high temperature and was put to bed with Calpol. He went to sleep ok but did not eat any dinner and was obviously unwell. WWYD in this situation? Check on him when you went to bed? Or beforehand? Or just chill out a bit? He's my PFB and I'm not sure how much I should worry...

Check on him as often as you like. I would :)

It's very likely to be a heat rash/hive or a rash in reaction to a cold, it's therefore very likely to be nothing but check on him as much as you like, it's amazing how clever maternal instinct is :)

Loonytoonie · 08/02/2011 20:22

Keep checking his temperature and make sure he has enough fluids (other than milk) during his waking hours. Don't force the food issue as his appetite will return when he's better. The rash could be a viral rash - tends to cluster around the trunk area.

Be prepared for a demanding night - he'll probably need lots of reassurance from Mummy tonight, bless him.

At 15 months, your GP will prioritise him so take him along in the morning if you're still worried. As far as tonight is concerned, give NHS Direct a call if it's on your mind. They're great for putting you at ease.
Get well soon little man x

pink and blotchy and fades under a glass sounds like a viral rash which will usually be worse when temperature is up. No need to worry. But you're the mum and check him as often as you need to for you to feel happy :)
By the way if you've got any freckles/moles roll a glass over them and see the difference between a rash that fades and one that doesn't

Thanks all for the great advice :)
Will try the glass over mole thing as I am never sure if the rash has faded or not. He is sleeping soundly ATM but we're probably in for a rough night (yawn)...

Often at bath time the heat of the bath makes any skin conditions look much worse.

Hope everything is ok this morning.

Hi all,
Just to update he is unwell - not seriously so but still has a high temp, not eating, mild tummy upset, although the rash is gone now... if he is still ill tomorrow I will take him to the doc to check there's no ear infection or anything.
Probably just a nasty virus as people have said.
Thanks again for the advice (yawn yawn, 2 hours sleep...)
Oh btw - can teething cause a high temp do you reckon?

Yes it can! Won't do any harm to have him checked over, but if your instincts are telling you "teeth" they are probably right :)

never heard of a viral rash but my 18m DS has had a cold on and off for about 6 weeks now and has just had a rash on his legs for the 48 hours that appears most in the bath (and disappears under a glass). This might be the answer. I love MN!
