to wonder why people put children's television on for babies?

Besides the arguments for and against television with regards to arguments about it's effect on a baby's mental development, why on earth would you subject yourself to constant cbeebies when you don't have to?

Surely the years before your child is old enough to demand the telly on are a gift to be able to have music, your own choice of telly or silence?

And surely if you have children's television on for babies then you are just training them to be children who want the television on all the time?

This is inspired by a friend of mine saying she's had to limit television time for her 2 year old to two hours a day as he was driving her mental demanding the television on all day everyday. So now she has him on a strict hour in the morning and hour before bed routine. Apparently he's tantrumming at the televison set all day wanting it on, so she's being strict and saying no and hoping he'll get used to the rules soon enough.

This is the same woman who had cbeebies on for him all day everyday from birth pretty much, bought him waybaloo and in the night garden stuff for his first christmas, took him the the in the night garden live show etc etc.

gah!

I put on cbeebies for my 9mo. Seems better than, say, silent witness.

She seems to enjoy the music and songs. And I feel less guilty about it because it's childrens tv.

Didn't know there was baby tv. Is there a baby channel? May have to investigate.

I think they will be drawn to watching the tv regardless of what is on it. So I felt better if DS was watching cbeebies as at least he is maybe learning something. of course I was aware that him watching tv all the time wasn't great so it was switched off a lot of the time.

Or, Heaven Forbid, Midsommer Murders!

My Ds (19 mos) won't watch the telly at all, unfortunately. Half an hour would be blissful.

My 8 month old DS loves Cbeebies - only when a programme is starting or finishing though! He loves the theme songs. He will play with his toys on the floor and when the music starts he watches the tv, claps his hands with excitement and then goes back to his toys.

I try to get out every day and he has no tv before bedtime or during meal times so in total he probably doesn't get a lot. I don't believe it is harming him in any way though.

And mumoflittlemouse waybuloo is my ds's favourite. He actually watches that one!

err because they watch it? and you can change clothes/hang washing out/cook/ have five mins?

amnd FWIW my 3 year old has little interest in TV, would rather jump off solfa and take saucepans out of cupboard etc etc

YABVU, when dd was a young baby, she had colic, and ITNG used to calm her down a bit, same goes when dd was teething too. DD was never a contented baby, and would howl for my constant attention, difficult when you are trying to clean loos and floors and do general housework, so putting on some tv just so that i could do some housework in peace seems a little price to pay. Now, dd is not addicted, she will happily go all day without tv, and I dont tend to switch it on except for evenvings for 1 hour before bed, or if i need a shower.

I was always dead against TV for under twos... but today DS (15 months) is poorly and we just watched half an hour of cosy CBeebies programmes about talking vegetables and juggling teddies cuddled up on the sofa together... lovely :)

Seriously though, I do think it's everything in moderation - and I wouldn't watch normal TV with him now - he notices shouting/fighting etc. When he was tiny and I was BFing him that was a different story, mind you...

My DS loves south park, the simpsons and family guy. We get the pretty colours without the banality that is babytv! He also loves Top Gear!!
Though I do like mickey mouse clubhouse and handy manny. Much prefer Disney to any of the shit on cbeebies!

YANBU, I agree. DS doesnt need to watch kids programs til he understands. Maybe not even then Wink

When she was doing her very best to die in hospital as a 5 month old pulling the TV down to her cot and putting it on enabled me to have 3x 15 minute periods a day to rush out of the ward and get some food. Maybe she choose to live so she could watch more cbeebies.
