From snippetsd I have picked up that Tiger Mum has become famous/infamous from being a very strict parent.

The little gem which gets quoted is that she rejected a handmade birthday card from her child because it had not been toiled over for long enough....hmmmm

She may be from a Chinese background; and they are forecast to take over from the USA
(Sez Mr Peston)

Please ladies tell me more. Is it a storm
over a childs birthday card...Or is there more too it?.. "Gabby"

I think her overall message of having high hopes for your children and encouraging them to think 'big' is worth listening to.

In terms of choice, with a Tiger mom behind you, the world is your oyster so to speak.

I do agree with Cory though that there are more fun/lovinging/imaginitive ways of helping your children to excel succeed.

I doubt very much that Kelly Holmes, Michael Phelps, Jamie Murray or Tom Daley can be said to have had "Tiger" parents. Supportive yes, but not pushy to the point of screaming at them if they didn't practice.

Actually, iirc, Kelly Holmes had a distinct lack of home support at points, all the more credit to her.

This pastiche is very good:
Sophia is our first born. At three months old, I left her for days on her own to learn Poincare's conjecture while I rewrote the US constitution, and by the time she was three she could speak seven languages, play Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto and had never so much as smiled. She was the ideal Chinese Tiger Mother's daughter.

My second child, Lulu, was more of a handful. Even though she, too, was far more talented than the second-rate children of decadent American parents, she tried to resist my will at every turn. At the age of two, she refused to do more than 10 hours of maths homework a night and deliberately played wrong notes in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. The only thing that worked was to wire electrodes to her hands.

There was a third child, Tiananmen. He was even more wilful and used to get out of his pram and stand defiantly in Times Square. Regrettably, I had to crush him with a tank. His death was not wholly in vain: Sophia and Lulu gave me a lot less trouble after that.

Grin Grin Grin @ Greythorne!

Grin - my sentiments exactly! Must admit, I cheered when Lulu smashed the glass.

Have to say, I hope not too many people buy this book - I hate to think of some narcissistic Yale professor making money out of child abuse, though if she does, I hope she'll spend it on Lulu's tennis lessons.
